Would anybody disagree with the above statement?

Right now I don't think we are.

Best team and best conference are different. We were second to the Pac 12 last year, thanks to their surge in the post-season, but far superior to the B1G as a whole.
I think we'll reclaim the status this year.

I am a fan of all the schools in the SEC. Love the conference

The SEC might be the best conference this year, but I think the gap is continuing to narrow.

we'll see at the end of the season.

Hands down the SEC is the best conference and its not that close. Now we haven't had the single best team lately.

It wasn't last year. The SEC was actually quite over-rated last year. However, most years it is, but not close to the level it use to be.
The game has changed dramatically the past 5 years due to head related rules changes. Football is far more offensive friendly now. QB play is far more important than it's ever been. The best high school QB's come out of California and Texas. The PAC12 is a very, very good conference now and was better than the SEC last year. We'll have to see about this year.

Had this discussion with a couple USCw fans yesterday. They obviously said the PAC 12 was the best because of the bowl record, but like I told them, you have to look at the matchups in the bowls, too. An 11th best sec team losing to a 6th best PAC 12 team doesn't mean the PAC 12 is better. I used to make a spreadsheet on this during bowl season, and its the same every year. Sec teams very rarely lose to other teams that are ranked lower in their conference, and regularly beat higher ranked teams.

I feel like people put waaaaaay too much stock in conference performance.

Nah, let's argue about it.

It would be foolish of them to do so at this point.
They are back on their way up, but they aren't there yet.

How do you mean? Best as in toughest top to bottom? Then yes, I would agree with you. Everyone recognizes this as fact except Big whatever fans.

Agreed, especially after the West was exposed to be a bunch of paper tigers in this past bowl season. However, I just think we had an uncanny number of down years across the conference in 2014, with it being a relative down year (in terms of historical or present program standpoint) for the likes of Auburn, A&M, LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, and South Carolina.
I still think we're the best, mostly because I think the Pac-12 is top-heavy in terms of comparison, but there's no arguing that they've anted up in terms of coaching with guys like Rich Rod, Todd Graham, Petersen, Leach, and Mora. In terms of the here and now, I think that their conference strength is being overblown heading into the season much like ours was this time last year.
I'll never buy into the hype of a Big Ten resurgence because of sociodemographic handicaps, and because they still have too many perennial cellar dweller programs like Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, Maryland and Purdue junking up the place, as well as lower tier programs like Rutgers and Minnesota with geographic problems. There's just not enough historical relevance or local talent to keep more than a few programs at a level of sustained success, especially compared to the fertile recruiting grounds of the South and the West coast.

This is kind of the bed we made for ourselves. The SEC is the only conference I know of with a community message board. It's certainly the only one with a forum as massive and successful as this one. It's become a source of pride to compete in the toughest league, with the hardest road to success. I know it's done nothing but be detrimental to Arkansas, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I think it's fun to band together against the rest of the country and cheer on the other members. Even if your team isn't winning, everyone here loves trolling too much to not get a kick out of watching fans of other schools throw hissy fits because they're sick of the SEC winning all the time, and sick of getting their asses kicked OoC.
