Nobody is saying you can't fly your shitty flag in your yard, but it shouldn't be on official government property.
You can't have it both ways. So anything someone finds offensive in government place will have to be taken down. Anything with God on it is on its way out because people like these starting this mess.

South Carolina hung the flag over the capitol beginning in 1962 to spit in the face of the Civil Rights movement. How is that not racist?

quote:Again it's what it meant in the past. South Carolina is not Flying the flag to show they believe in slavery now. Every flag we had before that and the founders of this country all represented racism. Just like the country being founded on God but they've done their best to get that erased too because it's not what they want to hear or see.
How is that not racist?
This is just like everything else in recent years with people trying to get attention and trying to get rid of what they don't like without losing the things they like that are equally offensive to others. I promise you if the government did away with everything that was offensive to certain people no one would be able to do anything and these people whining would be twice as bad.

No, they fought because they got drafted.
You are such an idiot and Bentley is a political coward.

I'm not an expert on flags by any means, but I think that's the flag of the Army of Tennessee. The Naval Ensign had a lighter blue.

Lottery is also on the table, but he also said he'd veto it.
Is this new? I believe his stance is that he would support a popular vote on the matter.

It's just art I grabbed off the web. The Naval Ensign and the Army of Tennessee's flags were very similar. In truth, there was a pretty good bit of variation among individual examples of both. The big difference that I wanted to show was the rectangular vs square shapes and, of course, the fact that the stars and bars flag isn't what adorned the top of the General Lee.

He'd still support a popular vote on it, but he basically said it was off the table for him this coming special session. He wants tax increases to fix the revenue problem.

Bentley trying to get tax increases is great and all, but I think he's pissing in the wind. What happens when he doesn't get those tax cuts? The budget still has to be balanced right?

It's going to be a mess. The thing is, a lottery would take at least a year to implement, then even longer to start seeing revenues so it does nothing for this next coming year's budget.

It will be one way or another. Probably through some compromise on increased revenues and FURTHER cuts for state services-Mental Health, Prisons, Medicaid, DHR, etc...
I'm pretty sure if he vetoes what comes out of the special session, the legislature could override him with a either a simple or 2/3 majority. Either way, this whole thing sucks. We borrowed app 150mil per year for the last 3 years, knowing full well this shite was coming, yet the legislature did not a damn thing to prevent it or deal with it.

I don't think they will cut prisons since they passed a pretty major prison reform bill to avoid having the Feds take over our prisons.
They'll cut the usual - services that largely impact the poor and indignant. Republicans will cheer, and then wonder why our health, education, infant mortality, crime, etc. statistics are always among the worst in the nation.

The sad/scary part of this is that the legislators actually seem to be representing the voice of their constituencies.

Just out of curiosity anyone know how long those flags were at that monument? If it was years I find it odd that NAACP did not make the NCAA boycott the state of Alabama for bowl game and tournament hosting like they have done to South Carolina.

I visited Montgomery in the early 1990s. But have not been back since. I took a tour of the state capitol. I don't remember seeing this flag. I don't think the tour guide talked about it. If it was there, they certainly weren't making a big show out of its presence.
I do remember there being a marker at the top of the steps indicating where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office as President of the CSA. But you would have overlooked it if you weren't observant.

I'm reading where people are saying things like "now they will want to tear down monuments to soldiers" and what not. I don't think so. It's not like where people in Poland were knocking down statues of Lenin after the Red Army leaves.
We didn't have governors and legislatures in the 1960s using soldiers' monuments as props for the defense of Segregation and Jim Crow. I've not seen the Klan or other extremists making a big deal out of a monument to the dead of some TN Infantry regiment at Shiloh.
Just a whole different dynamic going on with the flag. They should have kept the flag out of it in the 1960s if they didn't want it to be linked with contemporary opposition to civil rights and equality for all citizens.

It wasn't on the capitol. They were flown next to a confederate monument on the downhill side of the property. It was easy to miss if you didn't know it was there. I used to work a block from it, and you couldn't get a view of it from the roads. Lots of trees on that side of the property.
