Georgia Tech's SEC storied past

Was it a wise decision to leave?
This years incoming freshman class has the highest SAT average of any public school in the country and averages 9 completed AP classes. Students came from all 50 states and over 60 countries. It is also 39% female. Also of interest, 51% caucasian, 28% Asian, 7.6% Hispanic, and 6% African-American.
The engineering department earns more in grant money each year than the entire athletics department revenue combined between Oregon, Texas, Michigan, Alabama, and Ohio State...the top five earning athletics programs in the country.

No. They may be schools first, but conferences are athletic conferences.

Ga Tech has all of that, but they're in a P5 conference still.
So they'd have all of what you listed, plus shitloads of SEC money. The answer is no.

I would have enjoyed having GT in the SEC. The rivalry between yall and UGA would have more implications than just bragging rights

What does any of this have to do with GT leaving the SEC? Are you suggesting that GT would have been less of an academic/engineering school had that stayed in the SEC?

The fact that you think grant money has anything to do with athletic department money probably means the SEC made a good move in letting you walk.

I think Georgia Tech has grown at the same rate it would have in the SEC. Just because Louisville is in the ACC, it doesn't mean UL is suddenly a top tier university that isn't plagued by guido douchebags.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but are you forgetting that the ACC is a P5 conference? I'm not saying they wouldn't have MORE money now than they do in the ACC, but it is still a P5 conference.

The way he continued made it seem like they weren't making any money from athletics though, as if the "but they're in a P5 conference still" was a hypothetical statement about if they had stayed in the SEC.

I just checked out their athletic facilities. Damn, Tech would kill for some SECN money right about now.

Add me to the list who wish they were still in the SEC. They are solid athletically on a continuous basis with the academic limitations that they have. And scream athletics all you want, but strong academic schools bring a lot to the conference as well. There are reasons West Virginia never made it to the SEC during the last round of expansions...and it wasn't because of their lack of potential to improve athletic facilities. They, too, could have done some good things with SEC money.

Since Grant money is for Grants and stuff, and athletic money is for athletics; how many 4 ticket, 4 hot dogs and 4 coke family packs do you have to sell to match Oregon, Texas or Bama? I'm no engineer but my guess is a lot.

They've also won more national titles in football and been to more Final Fours in men's basketball than Georgia.

And they've been to regionals in baseball 30 times compared to Mississippi State's 34, Florida's 31, Arkansas's 27, and LSU's 28 times.
They've also won 17 conference championships in golf...which is way more than a lot of SEC teams.
They are a solid school both academically and athletically no matter how much you may dislike them.
