Since Florida is ranked higher than we are in both, I will say both.

Academics. By far. UGA being better in academics will mean more to me further on in my career if I pursue some of the stuff I want to do than UGA being better at athletics. Not to mention, I could always throw it in those young punks faces that in my days, we would have dominated them.

Also, it is very infuriating that UGA hasn't been making progress these past few years on academic rankings.

As an alum - academics.

Generally, though, I'm pleased with how the University is doing in both. Still lots of room for improvement, though. In both.

obviously.

your last sentence is a fragment. No noun or verb, and you started a sentence with a preposition.

This but if I had to pick one over the other, academics; it's the foundation of any university.

Athletics. After you get your first job, Degree doesn't matter nearly as much. It is much more about what you do with your work and how you network when career switching from that point onward.

Athletics for me.

Academics are important but its also important to be nationally recognized as a sports brand.

As an alum, I would say athletics without a split second's hesitation. Your question wasn't an extreme "you can be top 5 in one and bottom 5 in another" type thing, you just asked which we'd want to be better. UGA's academics have been steadily climbing and it doesn't look like that will change. In the choice of staying where we are athletically and improving 10 or 15 spots academically, versus staying put academically and moving up a tier or two athletically...I mean how is it even a question? After 1 year in the working world people don't really care where your college is ranked unless you are in a highly skilled or specialized industry. And even if we were to fall academically, UGA itself still has a good reputation. We'll never be on par with the mississippi, arkansas, kentuckys of the league.

And for the people questioning the "value" of their UGA degree...the 2 are independent of each other. Our athletics being better in no way, shape, or form will diminish your degree. That line of thinking is laughable. I can assure you that at no point in your career, after already having worked and proven yourself on the merit of your abilities, will your boss call you in and say "I've got bad news. I was checking out the latest U.S. News Report college rankings and your alma mater dropped 10 spots. We're gonna have to let you go."

Athletics. 1) basically what Greg said. After you get a job it's about your competence as an employee more than your degree. Unless you went to Harvard. Despite what wed like to think UGA ain't turning any heads. Nor is UF for that matter. 2) Georgia may improve academically but that won't change the value of my degree. In that scenario, my degree was earned before it attained its prestige. Let's say down the road UGA did improve dramatically. Would I get some collateral perks. Sure, maybe a few. But my degree isn't really worth that much more.

I love Georgia. More than I should. At work I play glory glory after a decent sale. Mainly to irritate vols. I want georgia to be the best at absolutely everything. But if push comes to shove give me athletics. My degree has done its job thus far. My experience isn't tarnished. Give my alma mater a few championships, though, and watch as her exposure increases even more and watch as the academics improve as a result of increased applications, donations, etc.

That's the thing. The two, athletics and academics, aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Call it the sec or fan boy mindset but improving your athletics can do so much more for academics than vice versa. Vandy has shown focusing on academics ain't gonna help athletics. But those mental midgets in Alabama have both seen their schools turn from prepping the nation's service industry to prepping the nation's service industry managers. Who knows? Another title in Tuscaloosa and you may very well see a Tide fan as an owner of a Applebee's franchise.

To conclude this novel I'll say this. HOPE has done UGA a tremendous favor and now that the initial boom resulting from that is waning (as is HOPE) I have doubts that the people who run this school can keep at this pace without just blindly throwing money. So, I say i want better athletics. I get titles and my alma mater gets to rob the athletic department blind.

Exactly. The only thing academic rankings do is fuel arguments with rival fans and help inflate recent HS grads egos.

The reality is that it really doesn't matter

There's a link that I"ll try to find, when I do I"ll edit this post with it, but it talks about exactly that. Alabama's academics from 2006 (pre saban) to present day is almost night and day. The numbers are off the charts. Let me try to dig it up.

eta: ok Everyone wants to go to Alabama

quote:

Since 2007, Tuscaloosa has swelled its undergraduate ranks by 33% to over 28,000 students. Faculty count has kept pace: up 400 since 2007 to over 1,700. But it’s more than growth – it’s where the growth is coming from. According to the school, less than a third of the 2007 freshman class of 4,538 students hailed from out of state. By the fall of 2012, more than half (52%) of a freshman class of 6,397 students did. Various data from US News and the New York Times shows that the school’s out-of-state tuition cost – nearly three times higher than the rate for in-state students – rose from $18,000 to $22,950 a year during that period.

quote:

For the admissions office, more applications mean more selectivity. Six years ago, 64% of students applying to the University of Alabama were accepted. By 2012, the acceptance rate had dropped to 53%. About one in four students from the 2012 freshman class carried a 4.0 high school GPA. The class also includes 241 National Merit Scholars, more than any other public university in the U.S.

This is what the michael adams tards of the world don't understand. Having superior athletics IS A GOOD THING.

If anyone has ever seen the 30 for 30 called The U, they talk about how many more applications Miami received once they won the title in 1983. I wrote a research paper that was somewhat related to this topic, and I used Michigan as an example. They receive more donations during the four months of football season than they do in the eight months of offseason, and I'm sure they aren't the only ones.

Depends on the degree to which either one was going to improve. If I could trade UGA winning a national title in football for a 10 spot drop in the U.S. News College rankings I'd take the national title.

But if the deal was UGA wins a national title in football but becomes Auburn, I wouldn't take it.
