So besides all of the defensive talk, does A&M have the guys to actually run the offense that compliments Chavis' scheme? I know they have WRs galore and a few stud RBs but what does the OL look like?

which resulted in what exactly?
Answer: one flash in the pan year
quote:hell have a defensive line that has legit talent, like backers that need a lot of improvement even though otaro alaka shows glimpses, and he will actually have the pieces at corner to be successful, safeties still a crap shoot. Just like you expect the quarterback play to improve, I don't think it's crazy to think our defense will go from being embarassingly bad to just meh
aTm still has ground to make up in terms of recruiting[quote] our last three classes have been 8th, 5th, and 11th
[quote]He always had top talent at LSU to work with

A&M is always looking 1-2 years down the road..obviously it's one long fricking road.

Hell, we tried to tell everybody that.

Heard this before
Yea, Mettenberger, who broke LSU records and started in the NFL as a rookie. The other time you heard it was regarding a true freshman.
Seriously, if you know so much about LSU, where did our D finish in the rankings in Mett's senior year?

For the umpteenth time, he doesn't have to be. A marginal improvement on that side of the ball will be sufficient.
And for the umpteenth time, you need players who could make LSU's 2nd team defense if you want to improve. A marginal improvement with yalls defense will not get you past 3rd in the west.

John Chavis, based on FACTS, is clearly a better DC than Kevin Steele.
Get the frick out with your rational posting

We'll call it even for y'all pussing out of our series in the 90s

Chavis has his work cut out for him at A&M.
Agreed. Any DC would. That's why we went after one of the best in the biz.

Trying to argue that A&M's defense is going to be more talented than LSU's in a couple of years is a bold statement though.
It's not outside the realm of possibility (nothing ever is), but that's not what I'm arguing. We just need him to improve our defense from "paltry" to "middling." He does that, and we'll be sitting pretty.

I highly doubt that Chavis will be able to improve A&M's linebackers. LSU never had strong LB play outside of Minter and Beckwith and Chief was forced to play Beckwith by Miles. I feel really bad for Garrett because his role will change from a rush DE to a contain OLB.

No, you just fall into Aggy groupthink too readily. Did you really just say that in a thread where almost every LSU poster is talking down the Chavis loss (aka something UNTHINKABLE back in November) and talking up the Steele hire (aka something UNTHINKABLE until Les also hired Coach O)? Glass houses Wade.
Are you trying to imply that a fan base that constantly gets called out as being schizo and 'hypocritical' actually succumbs to 'group-think'?
I can guarantee you that half of the LSU fan base is hoping Steele falls on his face, while the other half is trying to suck off the unicorn he rode in on.

Don't think your sig escaped me, I'm a huge Duke fan as well. He was the standard.
Now back to arguing; Fill your hands you LSU son of a bitch!

Yea I really don't expect him to either

this is fair and I think aTm will improve next year, but not enough to make yall hoop and holler about the hire. Or enough to win the west. I think yall are 2 years out from that. But I have no doubt that the west will shortly consist of Bama, LSU, OM, aTm and AU all beating up on each other.

DGAF about the NFL. I'm talking about what QBs do (or in y'all's case, don't do) in BR.

Which is why we've sought out quality defensive talent in recruiting

Yup, and it's amazing that y'all fulfill both roles, but Tiger Rant reminds us all of this on a daily basis.

Yall will likely get there, but it's not something that can be turned around in 1 or 2 seasons IMO.
That completely depends on what you mean by "turn around."
For me that is a top 70 defense. Chavis has produced a top 70 defense every single year he has been a DC. Something tells me he can get there in a year, since he has always done it. Something like top 70 next year, and top 40 the year after and I am as happy as I can be with the hire.
For an LSU fan it seems turnaround is a top 10 defense. I never expect to see one of those while Sumlin is head coach, so I would agree that is not somewhere we will get to in a season or two.
It is all relative.
Honestly prior to the bowl game I was more upset with the O than the D. Chavis is icing, not the cake. The cake is another five star qb and two new offensive coaches.
Posted on 3/2/15 at 4:21 pm to WestCoastAg
I think the secondary will be good though. Instead of playing press coverage I think Chavis will allow the safeties to play closer to the LOS and drop the corners back to supplement weak LB play.

This.
We don't need Chavis to usher in a new Wrecking Crew. Hell, we don't even need him to duplicate his LSU stats.
Just improve our defense from where it's been the past couple of years.
