Man they taught me cursive in kindergarten before I even knew manuscript under the guise of "you'll need this the rest of your life". I don't like being lied to.

I have mixed feelings on the subject, while I think it would be nice if we taught all students to write in it I think we have more important problems in our educational system and should worry about things like history, math, and grammar before we spend resources on cursive
The amount of ppl in this country who can't answer basic questions like who was the 1st POTUS or who is the current VPOTUS is simply baffling and depressing
And FTR, I was taught cursive in 4th grade and was pretty good at it. They told us we would ABSOLUTELY HAVE to know it and it would be mandatory for the rest of our lives
Fast forward to 6th or 7th grade and we used it for nothing. That always pissed me off

You'll always use cursive and algebra II has real world implications were the two great lies in education.

Cursive is useless and only useless people like useless things.

I can write much faster in cursive. Helps when I'm taking notes or drafting something before I type it and translate for others.

In some fields the algebra II part is true but totally agree about the big cursive lie

IIRC the Third Grade in Texas Public Schools when I was in public school in Texas was pretty much dedicated to Multiplication and Writing in Cursive. We spent time every day that entire year learning to write in cursive. (And repeatedly multiplying 2 sets of whole numbers from 0-12).
Practically half of an entire school year dedicated to writing in cursive.
You don't need it anymore. Why spend so many resources toward it? Teachers are already pressed to squeeze in the state mandated curricula as it is.
Before photography was invented a little part of every day was dedicated to drawing. You couldn't graduate the 8th grade if you coudn't draw a respectable landscape or still life.
Before GPS we read maps. Before trustworthy maps you read the stars with a sextant. Who among us could use a sextant tonight?
As we gain we lose. Very few of us can build a trebuchet. Some of us couldn't butcher a hog.

Teaching cursive doesn't take too long, and you can learn it young.

Arkansas Bill Passed To teach Kids to write in Cursive
By the 3rd grade in arkansas. Agree/disagree?
Its a lost art like writing a letter.
It's a lost art and it was lost in two generations basically.

IIRC we were made to work from a Handwriting textbook from the 3rd through the 5th grades. I'm sure it could be compacted, especially if expectations were lowered, but then why teach them to do it if in the first place if the quality of the product would be less than legible?
On an unrelated note: I was very happily surprised to learn from my 8 year-old last week that her 2nd Grade teacher had conducted a lesson on the difference between Wants and Needs. Since working in a convenience store when I was 19 I have been plagued by the realization that most Americans of ALL ages have a difficult time distinguishing the two.
Now I wish that Mrs. Smith would follow up with a lesson on Advertising. Teach them young that the cute cartoon rabbit on TV doesn't contribute anything to the flavor of the breakfast cereal. (How's that for radical?)

Not hard to learn but if you don't use it you ll lose it which is exactly what happened to me and many of my friends. I can sign my name and that's pretty much it

I only use a couple cursive letters in my signature.

I was taught cursive in 3rd grade and went back to printing in 7th grade when they told us we didn't have to write that way anymore. For me, I could always print notes faster than writing them in cursive. I'm laughing at the assholes at the state level that will have to grade cursive-answered state writing tests because of this.

I can still write anything in cursive and haven't had to use it since I was a kid too. Not disagreeing that it's pointless, but even over a 2 year spread it's maybe covered for a small portion of class each time.
iirc that is
