The Tuscaloosa News has learned that Thompson was told to find a job elsewhere.
Someone had to be the scapegoat for the Defensive play last year, and you knew it wasn't going to be Saban or Smart. Who gets the blame next year for a poor secondary ?

Saban hired Thompson once when he was at LSU and twice at Bama. Must not have sucked too bad.
But love how Gumps spin everything

Certainly we have produced some evidence of a melt by now, right?

Interesting comment from a fan of a team that fired its DC.

So a position coach has the same accountability as a DC now?
All the posters claiming our defense was shitty was just for fun and wasn't true?

Not reading this thread, but have the contract details been released? Not that it matters, as Auburn has a great coach now, but IMO it will clear some air on this "rumor"

Who is in charge of the performance of the defense? The defensive coordinator. Ellis and the staff he had assembled were not getting the job done. Alabama's defense was sub par this year, who takes responsibility for that? A position coach? Or should it be the DC along with the HC who is very involved in the defense?

how so?
and he was announced yesterday... will likely be a while before anything is made public.

#6 scoring defense is sub-par only by Bama standards.

Alabama won the SEC title and made it to the first ever playoff. Auburn lost 4 of their last 5 games.

For sure Kiffin, Smart, and Lord Saban are not taking the blame. The secondary was piss poor and that is on Saban. Spin it anyway you want, but your Dbs sux.
That had nothing to do with Steele or Lance.

Yea, that's generally how Saban works. Buddy buddy club and ignoring failure.

You want Saban to fire himself?

I wasn't stating anything other than that. There is a perception among the Bama faithful that the defense was not up to par, that they were giving up too many points. Hence, according to some in this thread, that's why Thompson was supposedly shown the door.
Auburn's defense was atrocious, no argument there, and that is why the DC was let go. Not a position coach, but the person in charge of the defense.

Don't know what happened with Thompson. He certainly doesn't deserve all of the blame, but I can't stand the guy and I'm glad he's no longer on our staff.

then explain how bobby williams has stayed employed by saban all these years?.... your special teams legitimately cost you at least one more SEC Championship and potential another national championship.

Why is that? To be honest, I don't know much about him other than he is supposedly a great recruiter, mehhh position coach and that Saban must have liked him since he hired him 3 times.
