I'm trying to plan a road trip all across the US. I wanna hit up some of the best places in all of America. Historical landmarks, museums, monuments, restaurants, highways, natural wonders...just best places in general. What are some of your favorite places in America?

You're near a great place to start out, Maggie Valley,N.C., then get on I40 and head west, there wont be much really to see until you get to New Mexico, but after that, its fantastic.
also then head north on I-5, once you get north of the smog, its incredible again.

Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri (or any of the surrounding lakes). Best kept secret in America.

Glacier National Park -
The Columbia river gorge with Horse
Tail Falls and Multnomah falls
Kootenai falls in Idaho
Kauai
and for some local flavor try Hemmed in Hollow
on the Buffalo and the upper Jacks Fork.
Taum Sauk
Elephant Rock
Amidon
Silver Mines
Visit them all and you have done well!

If you are around the Utah/Idaho line, check out the Snake River bridge in Twin Falls, ID. I wouldn't plan a trip around it, but if you are in the area it's a pretty cool sight to see.

I really regret not taking more time out to explore when I was stationed out west in Wyoming and Idaho.

Maroon Bells in the summer is breathtaking. You will see some amazing wildlife (on one trip an Elk walked up to within 30 feet of me).

I have been lucky enough to see 35 of the 50 states, and to me the five most amazing spots for natural beauty are (in no particular order):
Outer Banks of NC
Yellowstone
Bryce Canyon
Grand Canyon
Rocky Mountain National Park
Petrified Forest/Painted Desert and Badlands National Parks, as well as the San Rafel Swell on I-70 in Utah are very close as well.
Museums - the Smithsonian museums on the Mall. Haven't been to Dulles to NASM location there but here it is amazing.
Historic landmarks/sites:
Gettysburg
Little Bighorn
Shiloh
Independence Hall in Philly
Cities:
Charleston
Savannah
New Orleans
Nashville
New York
Vegas
Chicago
Architecture/feats of engineering:
Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis
Mount Rushmore
Stone Mountain (lame I know but still impressive)
Temple Square in Salt Lake City
Hoover Dam
Sports venues:
Churchill Downs
Daytona
Indy
