Re-watching the Iron Bowl, and this call was complete BS

No way the auburn return man should have been flagged for delay of game when he waved off his teammates on the punt. He used both arms, in a crossing motion, and never raised either arm or hand above his head which I believe is still required for a fair catch signal.
This was wrong, and I feel terrible. We can't go back now and change the score, but if you want to claim another 50 yards of offense towards your moral victory, you have my full support. Our apologies.

You gotta love how gumps confess calls are wrong AFTER the game
There are bad calls in most games just SEEMS like the ones in the gumps favor affect the games outcome

The refs have pretty much made it that you can't make any movement with your arms, other than catching the ball.
I was not surprised or upset with the call. You have to play the game the way it is called.

This is the exact same thing as a fair catch according to the rules. The call was correct and was explained by the ESPN crew.
You can't "wave people off" and then proceed to return the football. It doesn't work that way. That's why the rule exists.

They changed the fair catch rule three or four years ago.
Used to be that to signal fair catch, the returner had to raise his hand and give a "proper" signal.
The new rule is "any" signal by the returner is considered a "proper" signal.
