Question on AU playcalling - 1st Offensive Play of Game

Serious question. Not a flame, just haven't seen it addressed:
Why, with CAP, Corey Grant, Duke Williams, Sammie Coates, and the threat that is Nick Marshall - did AU swing call a pass to a FR RB on the first play of the game?
It just seemed odd to me. Were there ever any stories that Malzahn promised Roc the first touch in the Iron Bowl during recruitment? Seems a bit of a reach, but I know Tommy Bowden promised a Clem RB the first touch of the first game of the season once.

I'm pretty sure that kid from Clemson fumbled as well. Can't recall his name but I know he was from Jacksonville. Almost certain he fumbled, it was against bama in '08

I didn't think it was that odd. Thomas had been getting a considerable amount of playing time over the past few weeks, and is a good back in space. Not sure if they've run that same play to him any other time, but that play is a staple in their playbook. They usually throw it to Louis though, from what I've seen.

I think Saban or someone might have promised BJ Scott a "first play of the game" years ago. Opening game of the season, first play, he got a screen pass, dropped it, and then I dont ever remember seeing him on the field again until he moved to defense.

Seriously, I've not seen every minute of every AU game. Has Roc been out there on the opening drive much? Just found it odd for a 1st play considering you've got the SEC's leading rusher as an option, too.

Roc started one other game this year. I wasn't surprised he got the first touch.

It was the 12th game and he has played quite a bit. I think he was probably a more explosive option and maybe the defense wouldn't have expected it?

Because if Roc Thamas catches the ball& makes a few guys/breaks a tackle he can score where as CAP gets caught from behind very easily. Roc is a hybrid between Cadillac Williams & Ronnie Brown.

I mean the real answer is we don't know, Gus didn't come out and explain it.
It's probably just an example of over-thinking the play call and trying to get a little too cute. That being said, I don't really fault the offense for losing the game considering the points/yards scored.

I don' get that call.
Throw a swing, touch pass to a freshman versus read option with CAP or jet sweep to Bray or Grant or a go route to Coates.
Coaches over think things sometimes I guess.
Roc Thomas should develop into a big time player, but I would have called read option or play action there at almost midfield.
We lost. That was one of many plays that we screwed up and Bama made us pay.

Because it was a pass and assumed that the worse result is an incomplete pass.
In the stadium I thought it was a pass, not sure how close it was, surprised it was not reviewed.

It was clearly a lateral. The amazing part is Roc just looked at the ball and didn't even try to pick it up.

Did Roc play again in the game? I really don't remember. It doesn't seem like he got another carry or target, but wasn't sure if he was back in there for any plays at all.
