Racial gap in US arrest rates

Been all over my FB feed this morning. Locally they did a study and found a similar disparity. Sadly, I can see where this is going to turn into a "it's the police's fault" instead of addressing the very real issues going on black communities across the country that are leading to much higher rates everywhere. Not just in places like Ferguson.

When it comes to racially lopsided arrests, the most remarkable thing about Ferguson, Mo., might be just how ordinary it is.
Police in Ferguson — which erupted into days of racially charged unrest after a white officer killed an unarmed black teen — arrest black people at a rate nearly three times higher than people of other races.
At least 1,581 other police departments across the USA arrest black people at rates even more skewed than in Ferguson, a USA TODAY analysis of arrest records shows. That includes departments in cities as large and diverse as Chicago and San Francisco and in the suburbs that encircle St. Louis, New York and Detroit.

Or have a good lawyer.

I think the real gap in arrests has more to do with the poverty line than race. Just so happens minorities are much more likely to be poor.

Or be black in a good neighborhood?
The stat people like to torque stats to their pleasure. How about just looking at the stats by zip code? Maybe is not cultural at all? Maybe it's about where you live.
They always say to look at crime as a poverty issue. Well, follow those zip codes. Who lives there? Now it makes sense who is getting arrested.

If you're poor and don't have an education there is a high chance you're getting arrested.

A good lawyer will reduce your chances of getting convicted. It will do practically nothing to reduce your chance of getting arrested.

I could dig that.
At the same time, when looking at crime maps here in the city and what areas are predominantly black/white (while we have areas that are diverse, it's by majority white/black here) poor/rich it seems the more violent crime occurs in predominantly poor/black areas (i.e. see the West End, which has been featured all the damn time on the First 48). You see a lot of crime in poor/white areas but they tend to be more along the lines of theft/robbery and drugs (more specifically heroin right now) moreso than murder.
So while poverty is definitely a factor, I tend to lean towards there's some serious culture issues in these communities. Case in point, they are just now dealing with three men that shot and killed a toddler in a drive-by here. Why? Because no one in the neighborhood was willing to give the police information. They don't trust the police or the judicial system here. And given that we've had at least one murder witness murdered here in the last couple years while under "protection" I get the hesitation. But at some point people are going to have to start putting the fear aside and taking back their neighborhoods. Until that happens with any kind of consistently, it's not going to matter how much the police get blamed/reformed/etc or how many times Jesse Jackson shows up to protest.

Bet it depends on your zip code.

There are a ton of poor, uneducated mountainfolk around here. Other than a random DUI or meth bust, hardly anyone is ever arrested. Rural areas are going to have less arrests per capita.

When a minority becomes a majority stat (especially a bad stat), you've got a problem. First step is admitting you have a problem.

Where in Appalachia are you from?
sadly, meth has done the mountains in for many youth. It wasn't like that when I was a boy there.

Gotcha. VA hillbilly here. Went back home and I wanted to kill most of the teens and young adults I saw. It's sad how the place had deteriorated. Most with sense fled the area I guess and that just leaves the dregs and old folks.

A lot has to do with attitude as well, same with getting tickets usually. A little courtesy and respect goes a long ways. But most people are so narcissistic, that they will become combative towards any type of authority, no matter if they're in the wrong and many times, people escalate the situations. Not every time.. but enough to matter.

I think it goes beyond that. There's an attitude that permeates, in that someone won't snitch, and they will handle it themselves. Which invariably leads to revenge crime and it just escalates and continues on until someone is eventually sloppy enough to be caught and become a minority statistic.

There is a reason that I have a clean record, and only one arrest. Mama didn't raise no fool.
