Pros? Cons? Advantages? Disadvantages? I have no idea.
ETA: 17 inch rims are also an option.

Meet in the middle with the 17s

what are they going on and what overall diameter do you want to end up with?
If they are going on a truck then a smaller rim with bigger tire will have more give if you go offroad. If it is staying on the road then thicker tires might be too bouncey.
If they are going on a car, then a bigger rim with thinner tire will be fine to stay on the road.
16" tires will be a shade cheaper than the 18", 15" is even cheaper with lots of options.

I have 18's. You can only buy low-profile tires which are much more expensive, but if you're into performance, have a few benefits.
edit: Obviously depends on what it's going on...I have a car so low-profile is only option with 18's. I'm guessing you don't need it, but finding low profile snow tires is a pain in the arse.

knowing the vehicle and what you plan to do with it would be really helpful

Sorry. A new Chevrolet Colorado.

17's and take that ugly arse air dam off the front end.
I really like the new Colorados but think GM screwed the pooch on that air dam.

Man those things look awesome in the new commercials.
I will say, unless you get the standard size, the tires are going to cost significantly more. Still couldn't resist the good rims on the sierra.
ETA: The Canyons look better.

I'll be buying one next year. The wife wants to upgrade her Altima first. I just didn't know if there was some reason to choose a different rim size besides aesthetics.

That's actually a good idea. Rumor has it that a lot of the GM pickups will have an 8 speed transmission.

I have always been a firm believer that the rims (stock options only) make or break the way a vehicle looks. I would at least keep away from the hub caps and get true rims.

It has never occurred to me to change the rims on my car. I hear the floor workers at some of our facilities talk about it, but honestly I've never given it much thought. What does it do other than change the look?

He's not changing them, he's buying a new car, so he's thinking about which ones to get. There is a huge difference.

Obviously a terrible poors joke, but I'm guessing you misunderstood what he's talking about all together.

Well for starters, the tires on different size rims are different prices.
