In basketball after long-time basketball manager Bill Keightley died they all wore jerseys with his name on the back. They got it approved through the NCAA.

I was born after Jack Daniels died... I still honor him. I actually will be honoring him this Saturday while wearing a 38 sticker so

It's the 25th anniversary. It's a commemoration. It helps to retell the story, and understand who he was and what he stood for.

I'm not flaming, but I'm always a little surprised at how big a deal the Chucky Mullins thing is. It's a tragedy of course, and the subsequent friendship and stories are very touching, but it seems like it sent some real waves through Mississippi that perhaps others (me) can't appreciate.
I can understand how it happens, however. Not that they're similar scenarios, but for a guy I didn't know, the Lutzy thing shook me up good, and did the same to most AU people, I think. I'm sure outsiders didn't quite feel it the way we did, which transcended your typical former player death/serious injury.

I can't believe I didn't have more familiarity with this. I'm going to try to catch a re-run of the SEC Network's special. Seems like a really touching story.
Classy move, Rebs.

It sounds like you understand, then. Albeit, Lutz's death did not happen as a result of what thousands of people witnessed in person on a football field. Not downplaying his death by any means, but can you imagine being in the stadium that day? What if 75,000 people witnessed the actual car wreck? All those people that were there for the Vandy game have that image burned in their memories forever. It would be hard to tell anyone that was there that it wasn't a "big deal."
I didn't know Chucky either. Wasn't there the day of the hit. However, I'm glad the story is still being told, and like another poster said, this is the 25th anniversary so it's just another cool way to honor him.

Yeah I'm certainly not claiming it isn't a big deal, just that I think it had an impact that the rest of us don't fully appreciate.

This.
My parents were at that Vandy game in 1989. My mother was not happy with me playing football as a result. Many others feel the same way, even today.
When I was a kid, Chucky Mullins was as big of a part of Ole Miss Football as Archie, Dixie, Col. Reb, etc. It's hard to compare him to someone else at another school, but I would liken it to our version of Rudy at ND.
I am proud we as a university are honoring his legacy 25 years later in this fashion. Chucky represents a turning point in our university and state's history for the better. Sad to say, his injury was the first time Ole Miss supporters and Mississippians of any color came together for a common cause... to support Chucky and one another in a tragedy.

This is what Im confused about. What did he stand for? Not flaming at all. He played in the late 80's when the race barrier had been broken, and race was pretty much a non issue in football by that time. Just curious.

The reason they're doing this is to promote awareness about racial segregation. It's awareness week on campus and they just renamed Coliseum Drive, Chucky Mullins Drive. They also finally covered up Confederate Drive this week.
