Should high school homecoming courts be done away with?

I saw this story about an unattractive girl who was tricked into thinking she was nominated to the homecoming court at her school.
LINK
The story reminds me of my senior year in high school. My homeroom nominated the weirdest girl in our grade to the homecoming court. There were some mad teachers, but the girl appeared to be cool with it. She participated in the parade and was crowned homecoming queen.
The same thing happened at my school 5 years earlier. They nominated some redneck chick who also won. I remember her wearing jeans out on the football field that night. I think she ended up transferring about a month or two later.
Thoughts?

The girl who won homecoming queen my senior year was basically given it because she had some sort of disorder that left one of her hands really tiny. Like, her whole body was normal but one of her hands was miniature sized, almost like a claw.
She wasn't unattractive, but there were other girls on the court that were just as nice and had as good of personalities, that were definitely hotter.

There are few creatures more evil and cruel than American teenage girls.

Teenagers in general are just horrible people. We should put them in giant camps until they grow up.

You know, if it lets them work out their stupid life cliches (really popular and attractive couple wins homecoming, really odd and unattractive underdog wins homecoming) then let em keep doing it. They'll look back and either feel like such fools that they refuse to speak of the incident ever again and become better people for it. Or they'll rest easy on this completely insignificant accomplishment for the remainder of their worthless lives and it will make it much easier for the rest of us to pick out the douche bags.
I see no problem with this charade.

No. Don't punish everyone because of the actions of a few.

If we keep isolating kids from shitty situations they'll never learn how to deal with them. Getting rid of a homecoming court isn't going to stop kids from being shitty kids and doing things like you talked about in your OP.
I liken it to the recent bullying issues. Some of it is things we've dealt with for years. Some of it is newer issues because of the emergence of technology such as Facebook. Some of the things that have been created to address it have been very good, especially when it comes to addressing bullying via social media. But some of it has also created issues, especially among children and parents who are unable to distinguish between harmless teasing between kids and full on bullying.

FIFY. They are ALL fricking evil. I know. We raised 3 of them. They turn nice again about 21.

Generally agree. The PC pussification of America continues. Used to be we dealt with this shite at 3PM on the playground. I gave and I got on that space, but shite got dealt with.
Hell, with my own grandkids I note that their schools dont even have swing sets any more because the schools are scared the wittle things might get hurt. (and probably sue.)
What a master race of sandy vaginas this country is turning into.

In their defense, when we handled shite on the playground it was generally pushing and shoving and some punching but in the end you dusted your arse off and worked it out.
Today? I've got middle school kids beating each other to the point of being put in the hospital (and not because of a parent freakout) or worse.
Overall though, I agree with you. There is definitely this growing gap between helicopter parents and parents who flat out don't give a shite with not much inbetween.

While those c you next Tuesdays suck, is everybody ignoring the extreme kindness that was displayed by the other two girls in the story?
I mean I hate teenage girls as much as anybody, but those two are rockstars.

That they are. If only more could be like them.

they are ok, I'm sure they can be just as bitchy as the rest of them when the mood strikes.

I was lucky in high school. For the most part, nobody picked on anybody else in my grade, and our high school even had stupid sororities. Seriously, faux sororities in high school. All of us invited to join refused, because they were all complete bitches and hazed the crap out of pledges. So there can be exceptions to the rule, and some teenage girls are nice.

Who would be punished? I think you have it backwards - it would be the 'few' (the girls who live for that sort of thing and their mothers living vicariously through them) that are punished, if you want to call it that.
I think you'd find that the 'many', the majority of the students and alumni don't really give a crap.
