Interesting. Can't watch right now.
What is his reasoning for it?

"We always tell our guys right when they get here that 'You're going to be brilliant at the basics'. We want guys that can move their body weight through a full range of motion."

"We don't care if a guy can bench 450 when he gets here, he better be able to do 20 strict push-ups because they're not going to be benching that whole first summer that they're here. They'll learn to be good with their own body weight and then once they get those things right, the other things fall in place." Russell explained.

A little bit different than first semester.
I imagine it has something to do with the enormous weight (figuratively) that people put on 'how much can you bench.' He probably wants to make sure that they're not just benching but doing squats, cleans, etc.
Having a heavy bench is just masturbatory if you aren't squatting heavy and doing other stuff in the weight room that's just as much or more important for athletic purposes.

That makes a lot of sense... It is being sure you are doing it correctly... Seems to work...

For guys that are 300+ pounds, doing 20 pushups isn't so far off benching 225 for reps. I don't mind that philosophy since it encourages weight that can function not just fat.

Yea, I like it. Make sure they have a good foundation of core strength, then expand. Make sure everyone gets to a certain level from the variety of high school programs.

Wants the people to be really good at the basics....says he doesnt care if a kid comes in capable of benching 450 lbs....he better be able to do 20 strict form pushups.

I'm being a pedantic jerk but there are only two semesters a year by definition. Summer would be their first term on campus, sure. Your statement kind of implies they spent a whole fall or spring not benching... not benching for a few weeks in the summer isn't that bad.
Anyway I think Russell knows whats up. Lots of guys wear their bench #'s on their sleeve but in the context of football it's only one of many important lifts.
