The political economics of college athletics

This is a compelling article about the oligarchy of the NCAA. It made nearly 1B USD last year 84% of which came from March Madness. (That actually surprised me). While I am a fan of college athletics, I think the time that the money made from it be distributed to the athletes who make it possible is long over due.

Well worth the read.

That is why they really dont give a shite about football. all their money comes from basketball

NCAA must be kicking themselves for letting College Football go to the bowl format.
Playoff revenue would be amazing

Hell will literally freeze over long before the U.S. Department of Education ever allows this to happen.

So only men's basketball players should be paid?

Technically the benefits a college athlete recieves is equivalent to about $80k in taxable income once you throw in the personal training, food / nutritional supplements, tutors, and clothes.
Ask a ECHL player or single A ball player if they'd trade places. Plus college poon so there's that.

Something I have always wondered ....
CFB total attendance vs CBB total attendance?
I mean ... if it might show anything.
TV is a mighty powerful thing.

Absolutely Agree.
It needs to come in the form of several things:
1. An absolute guarantee of a complete education, including tuition, books, room and board - regardless if they become hurt or injured and can no long play.
2. Medical care for the rest of their life for injuries received on the playing field, during training, practice or in actual participation of their sport, regardless whether they can continue to play the sport or not as a result of the injury.
3. Some type of monthly stipend while they are actively involved with a team representing a school.

Should be voided if they leave early, cheat, flunk out, or get caught breakin the law.

Makes sense.

Do walk ons and scrubs and women's polo players get as much as the starting point gaurd?
Also when bitching about the money in college sports lets not confuse top line revenue with profit.
For example I think LSU's expenditures for football alone was something north of $45M, and Hawaii's football program is in such shitty shape that they are thinking of shutting it down.

Do people even know the history of the NCAA anymore?
Started out as a government mandate and Dr Dudley (who started what became the SEC) was an original member. After WWII the NCAA used the point shaving scandal in NYC to gain monopolistic control of both football and basketball. This monopoly became the tool of the B1G and to a lesser extent the PCC (now the PAC) and national football on TV was doled out to few teams with heavy favoritism. Walter Byers ruled as a dictator and conferences like the SEC suffered greatly for over a quarter of a century until the revolt in the 1970's.
Schools not in the B1G or PAC revolted in the 1970's and 3 events broke the monopoly forever :
#1 ESPN formed and the ACC and Big East benefitted
#2 NCAA vs Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma
#3 CFA formed to the benefit of the SEC, Big 8, SWC, and IND's
Had Walter Byers not pimped the B1G and PAC for a quarter of a century at the expense of the rest of CFB the NCAA would probably still have control of football the way they still do in college basketball. Rupp was so furious at what happened in the NIT that he vowed never to go back and the NCAA used him as a cornerstone to make March Madness what it is today.

Most college degrees are a joke, especially the ones "earned" by athletes. Further, college tuition has been inflated to absurd levels. I would much prefer the money. They would get the other stuff anyway.

The NCAA is a monopoly. Monopolies by their very nature are corrupt.

Yes, same amount, whomever is on the team, practice squad, walk ons whatever

Yeah, it really is laughable hearing their arguments for payment. If you don't want your likeness marketed, don't accept a full ride scholarship. It's simple really.
With that said, I would be in favor for a monthly stipend, comparable to what a part time job would pay.

March Madness is pretty much the only thing that the NCAA controls.
Also, the money gets redistributed to pay for athletic expenses for schools.

Most athletic departments aren't making much if any money, especially if you take away state subsidies. These programs would have to raise tuition or cut other sports to pay the players. Its not just the small schools either. link I see UT, UGA and AU all losing money if you take away the subsidies.

if you are granting "walk-ons" a stipend for playing a sport, is that not a form of scholarship and couldn't programs abuse that option?
