I'll start worrying about the defense if there is no improvement when DePriest returns.
We have a bunch of undersized DBs in a league full of beast WRs. Start worrying.

What could have been. Making his 1st start former Bama Qb Phillip Ely was 24-34 for 337, 4td's and 0 int's for Toledo.

He's more likely to be the worst.

Glad for Ely though.

AJ was a Heisman finalist. Sims looked fine to me for his first game (though he looked bad throwing on the run). However, WV was ranked in the 100s for pass D and scoring D last year, so they aren't exactly a good test (I doubt this year's WV team will be world beaters on D either).

Ely is perfect for that system.

passing accuracy didn't appear to be that great

Not on deeper passes. But he was 24/33 (73%) overall with at least three drops by receivers, so his accuracy was pretty decent on what he was asked to do. The problem for Sims is going to be when teams crowd the box and bump the receivers - is he going to be able to make them pay over the top? At some point he will have to, not sure if he can yet.

The guy completed 71% of his passes and threw for 250 yards. He did have an INT, but he was told to make that throw. Christian Jones dropped a 40 yard pass as well that might have been a TD. He also avoids pressure better than any QB under Saban and can scramble with nice speed for first downs.
Slow your roll Gilligan
It was only WV.

Sims looks good enough to win with providing he plays within the system but saying he's better than the guy who won back to back NCs is a bit of a stretch.

Apparently Saban still has faith in Coker too. Says both will play against FAU.

You'd think somebody would have taken care of that deficiency since it's been sticking out like a f***ing sore thumb for 2 years.
It may be very well be a problem this year. However, while spread teams have given Saban more problems than traditional offenses, Bama's won-loss record against spread teams during his tenure is actually pretty decent...
It appears that when Bama's D struggles against the spread, it doesn't apply to all spread teams. It might be different this year, but we haven't had any problems stopping the Ole Miss spread the past two years...nor Mississippi State's spread since Mullen has been there...and I think Saban/Bama was 2-1 against Florida when Urban was there...

God I hope Sims is not the eventual starter. He has serious limitations.
