The redder the area, the more devices there are.

I'm surprised Japan isn't redder.

He's got to be mapping them by city or something, because there's no way South Africa has got such a small amount and shitty little towns here in Nevada like Hawthorne and Ely show up.

Or South Korea. (edit . . I guess they're red . . just tiny)
And look at us . .all wired up to some of the shittiest ISPs in the developed world.

Ely used to have 4 houses of ill repute. Maybe all the business patrons show up.

Japan has a lot of rural areas and nice countryside. The problem is mostly Tokyo. of the 126 million people in Japan, 35.6 million live in the Tokyo metropolitan. That is 1/4 of the entire population in one metro.
The next largest city in Japan is just under 4 million.

Or that one roasting in Libyan Sahara.
I'm surprised by the dearth of internet connectivity in Africa.

Kind of doubt the accuracy of this map. I think China has a LOT more devices connected to the internet than what is shown. Certainly other asian countries as well. Japan and Korea in particular.

China has a national firewall. That's why not many, relatively speaking, connections show up. It would be very red if the author had been able to ping Chinese devices. Those showing up must be foreigners.
Korea is very red considering how tiny that country is. They have 45 million people in a country the size of New Jersey.
Japan's population is super urban and can be easily distinguished by the red on that country's map.
