Can someone give me some information regarding Sumlin. Which QBs was he directly involved in recruiting during his collegiate career. I realize Manziel was a Sherman signee. Who has Sumlin actually convinced to sign with his team? Keenum? And then going further back?
Posted on 8/21/14 at 6:42 pm to PharmacistReb
nobody except TAMU's current QBs. He did not have a hand in bringing Keenum or Manziel to UH and TAMU, respectively. He also inherited a beastly OL from Sherman.
Like I said, this year will be a telling year. If TAMU remains a superior football team on the offensive side, I'll buy in to Sumlin as in offensive guru. As it stands it's hard not to say he has been equal parts a talented offense mind and a guy who has been in the right place at the right time.

Both he and Gus don't have enough data yet. This year will tell quite a bit. Not everything, but the picture will get clearer.

Gus has been far more successful than Sumlin. You're talking about a guy who won a championship (chiz deserves no credit whatsoever), and turned a train wreck of a team into a national title runner up in 2 years.

This is a reasonable assessment.
The next two years will reveal much about Sumlin's offensive prowess on this stage.

You don't know what kind of an overall Head Coach Gus is. He has 2 years experience as a Head Coach, one year at one school, and one year at another. He can come in, motivate rah rah, and get a good season in year one. We've seen that. Can he maintain it? That's the challenge of every Head Coach. He'll have to prove it, just like Sumlin, and every other Head Coach that hasn't proven themselves over a long period.

dude, you're showing your Bama.
What Gus did with Auburn last year with nothing short of amazing. Call me when Sumlin sniffs a national championship and we'll talk about comparing the two.
Obviously, sustaining a program is just as challenging as building one and Gus will have to show he can sustain success, but that is not the conversation we're having as it pertains to this thread.

Sumlin recruited neither Keenum nor Manziel. Keenum was brought in by Art Briles/Dana Holgorsen, Manziel by Mike Sherman.
Literally that is completely irrelevant to the question at hand.
The jury is still out...but I have a feeling that the QB position is going to be just fine under Sumlin for the foreseeable future.

Yep.. what you do to develop what you have.. Showers was going to start in the Mike Sherman offense. Johnny would have had trouble making the field. We were all shocked when Johnny got the nod and Showers transferred out.
Jamil Showers is a great QB and could start at a bunch of schools IMO. He was following in the footsteps of tannehill

Uh, no. Sumlin recruited neither Keenum nor Manziel. Keenum was brought in by Art Briles/Dana Holgorsen, Manziel by Mike Sherman. He inherited Briles' system in Houston and then brought Kingsbury, a Briles hire, to TAMU with him This season will actually be a first for Sumlin in that he is captaining the ship of an offense with a QB that he recruited plus and an OC he hired all by himself.
WTF does it matter who recruited the kids??????????????????????????????
He's talking about developing QBs. GD, I know you are from Louisiana and all, but try to figure out how to not be such a dumbass

Coaches can only develop what's on their team....and win/loss record is a direct reflection of their effectiveness in development. Period.
Mike Sherman sucked arse with all that talent, yet Sumlin comes right in and develops them to a #5 team ranking in the nation. I don't think that is lucking into anything.

The point is, QB development
How many 5 star QBs every year don't achieve even a fraction of the success of those guys? He still has to coach them when they get to campus.

kinda hard to retain the name Johnny fricking Football when you were just named second string for the Browns

Manziel has openly said that aTm only runs 5 plays and that he was NOT taught how to read a defense. The scheme aTm runs can be very effective until it meets an athletic defense.

Sumlin has had some great QB's in his head coaching career/coordinator career.
Without the flamboyance that you provided, it will be interesting to see what he does going forward. I think Manziel and Keenum would have been dynamite with or without Sumlin.
It would have been more telling that Sherman wouldn't have started Johnny than it is that Sumlin did start him. Johnny was dynamite. So Sherman is a dumbass. But I still want to see that Sumlin actually develops a QB as opposed to being objectively better than Sherman at seeing a great athlete.

I'd give the nod to Richt or Spurrier.

This is what I'm talking about, Sumlin getting no credit. It's absurd. However, I'll wait and see what happens with the guys he has this year. These guys come out and look dynamic, which I think they will, it will be pretty much settled. IMO, I think Sumlin is glad JFF is gone. It had become all about him.

That's hyperbole and Skip Bayless type rhetoric. Johnny demanded attention because of his ability and I'm sure Sumlin likes that that aspect is gone, but Manziel was the GOAT. If Sumlin could have had two more years of Johnny he would have taken it without question.

I mean. He did offer him when no other good program in state would. There were also rumblings they might have burned Manziel's shirt if Tannehill went down and they were in the title hunt because everyone knew of his x-factor. Sherman was a West Coast guy. Complex playbook. The air raid was perfectly suited for Manziel, and even Sumlin and Kliff were on record not knowing what Manziel's true escapibility was like until the season actually started. I think there are a lot of coaches that wouldn't have started Manziel. Saban might have asked him to transfer.

Technically this will also be a Mike Sherman offensive line.
