The Daily Show Discusses, "The NCAA's Perfectly Fair Rules"

The Daily Show takes on the NCAA and it's pretty funny and thought provoking
quote:
Aasif Mandvi interviewed former UCLA player and NBA pro Ed O’Bannon, who's suing the NCAA for using his likeness in a video game.
But the center of the piece was the story of University of Minnesota wrestler Joel Bauman, who says he lost his eligibility because he wrote and produced a song.
"I have 10 percent scholarship," Bauman said. "That doesn't cover a lot. On top of that, I cover my living expenses. The song hasn't made me rich. I haven't even broke even. Right now, the NCAA owns the name Joel Bauman until I graduate."
Mandvi then stated sarcastically:
"Yes, this type of profiteering would sully the NCAA's image as Stuarts of amateur athletics. After all, their mission is to protect college sports from the corrosive influence of commercialism and to uphold the ideal of the student-athlete who simply plays for the love of the sport."

IDK. The NCAA is not perfect, but it is the only thing keeping college sports from being semi-pro. I love the college game. Be careful what you wish for.

Everything about it is professional except for player compensation. Why is it such a big deal to lose "amateurism"?

Can we stop acting like they aren't already semi-pro?

Hell, it would probably SAVE the boosters money since they could pay the recruit directly and not have to pay all his coaches and family and everybody around him

That Rutgers coach got fired for nothing.

Sounds like the NCAA is doing pretty well.

I dont think booster will ever stop paying players but I do wonder if they'll be like, "we'll give you up to a 6.5% match on your scholarship to be used at your discretion" kinda like a 401k

I'm fine with it being semi-pro.

and what will happen to say Tulsa which is currently losing millions of dollars a year in football?

Sounds like nothing different than is happening now.

I'm iffy on a set salary but if a kid wants to sell his jersey or autographs, let him.

Just let the kids own their likeness. Period. Title IX doesn't say shite about Nike paying a guy a few grand to be in a commercial. EA owes every single one of them a shite ton as it is.

If you come to uga, we got a car dealership that will pay 59k for your likeness on a billboard. If you come to auburn we got a dealership pays 65k..

The point that unpaid athletes are being used to generate billions of dollars is valid. The least that could be done for them is to provide full-ride scholarships and insurance against injuries.

How's that any different than now? At least if it's on the books there could be a vetting process regarding boosters.
