quote:Just because nationally people like Auburn more than Bama doesn't mean they are Auburn fans. The fact there are twice as many Bama fans in the state as Auburn and they are not graduating many more fans than Auburn, is more than enough to show they have way more sidewalk fans than Auburn has. Likely about twice as many.
Of course not. If Bama has a higher % of sidewalk fans than Auburn, then it's not possible that the links Auburn fans like to post about having a larger national fanbase than Bama are true. Unless the inbreeding amongst AU fans is far worse than anyone thought.. Stupid thread

People who cheer for Auburn generally have ties to the university, like being an alumni, having family or friends who are alumni, growing up in the town, etc. Auburn doesn't carry the state name in its title, so people who grow up without an affiliation to either institution aren't likely to grow any sense of loyalty to the school. This pretty much results in Auburn fan having less in the way of numbers but the average Auburn fan is usually pretty solid.
On the other hand, like with many state schools, Alabama picks up a whole bunch of fans from carrying the name of the state alone. Combine that with the bandwagon effect and the fact that a lot of these people live in a state with some really uneducated areas, and you've got a lot of people that are frankly pretty freaking stupid pulling for the team to make them feel better about their own unsatisfying lives.
The Alabama fans that I know that either attended to school, lived in Tuscaloosa and had friends go to the school, or had in some way, shape, or form a quantifiable attachment to the institution are usually knowledgeable, cool people that are no better or worse than any other sports fan. It's just that bandwagon fans from uneducated areas suck noodles, and Alabama unfortunately has plenty of those.

The rest of the country looks at both Universities, the state, and the region in the same light.
Same region, yeah, but like I said in my previous post the fanbases as a whole are a different makeup. Alabama has probably 65 percent of the state in their corner, and of these there are a good number that have no ties to the school. Of these, a majority suck.

Otherwise, both fanbases have their bad seeds, Alabama just has what seems like the worst fans in America based on the notoriety of their bad deeds.
The AU fans feeling of superiority is hilarious.

quote:Yeah. If they were graduating twice as many people, which they are not. So either way they have more sidewalk fans. But it is still irrelevant to who are better fans. You don't have to go to school somewhere to be a quality fan. All I can say is ask people who aren't AU or UA fans and see which ones they think better of.
Then the national fanbase polls Auburn fans tout are ridiculous. If Bama graduates more than Auburn, and has twice as many sidewalk fans, that is the only explanation.

Same group of people. The fans who choose to root for Bama are usually the kind who want to be asscociate with a winner, the ones who choose to root for AU are the kind who feel they don't deserve any better, sort of like the battered wife syndrome.

Or people who don't want to be associated with the Updykes or teabaggers of the world

Are you also a fan of the New England Patriots, LA Lakers and New York Yankees?

I'm guessing you didn't choose based on what school you attended?

Sounds exactly right. I would only add that bama fans are not content to be a fan of their school but refuse to allow AU fans to enjoy their fandom. They can't NOT say something derogatory to an AU fan when they find out they don't worship at the altar of bammer.

I had this kid see my AU tag and say, "You go for Auburn? I go for a winner." I asked him who he "went for" when they were losing 6 in a row to
AU. He said, "Miami."

No, they didn't win anything lately so he chose Seattle, Heat, Boston Red Sox. Ask again in December.

So, you didn't choose to be an AU fan, you just felt obligated due to a service you purchased?
