The fact is, Sarah Palin (more, the idea of Sarah Palin) scares the bejeebers out of the Democrats and liberals. A female conservative that might carry a large percentage of the female vote? That would be the death knell to liberals.
And the media and Obama campaign were smart enough not to take her on on the issues. They had to vilify her and make her a national joke before she could be taken seriously.
It is the same thing whenever a conservative black starts to get any kind of national traction. That terrifies the liberal establishment even more than a conservative woman.
