There is a lot of butthurt south of the border where Mexicans and other Latin Americans will go at -great lengths- to try and call us something other than ''American'' or ''America''.
Usually the argument revolves around: America doesn't consist of all of the Americas (South, North and Latin) and so they generally try to use very poor patchwork techniques.
First we have: ''Norte Americano'' or ''North American''. The problem posed here is that: Mexico, Canada, America and Greenland (with some smaller territories) all consist of North America so the problem isn't really fixed.
Second we have: Estados Unidos or ''the United States''. The issue with this one is Mexico is, officially, ''Estados Unidos de México'', so they too are ''Estados Unidos''.
I don't really care that much, but I hate when they fix things without really fixing them at all.
What's even worse is when we're referred to as ''United Statesians'' or ''Estadounidense''.
Screams small man syndrome.

You know it's funny that you say that. The term for Football is ''American Football'', strange that they don't say Estados Unidos, Futbol de Norteamericano.

I don't -really- care about what people call me -- it's the pitiful act of trying to change it while simultaneously running into the same problems.
Mexico clearly cares, since anytime the word ''America'' or ''American'' is uttered, they translate it into ''Estados Unidos''. I'm just saying, small man syndrome.

The only other logical thing we could be called is "Statesmen" which then becomes a PC problem with the gender. I think it's ridiculous but I am aware that they do this.

I think, personally, if I was going to fix this is: ''American National''. That eliminates all confusion.

Every Mexican I've encountered and I've encountered many (all born and raised in Mexico) as well as various nationalities from Latin America/South America has had no issues with it.
Estados Unidos isn't a slam and it's been around forever. It just means US (United States) and is used the same way we use it - to say things like "the United States..." And just like here in the US, we commonly use United States or Estados Unidos rather than United States of America which is much longer. But like us on occasion they do use the longer Estados Unidos de América. And getting mad that Mexico uses Estados Unidos Mexicanos is stupid. Like us their real name is longer than the shorter name Mexico. That name? The United Mexican States.
Norte Americano is used to say "John is a North American" just as we might say "Javier is a South American." Norte America is just North America.
None of this remotely new or an attack on Amurrrica. You can unclench.

A Mexican living in MRKA is different than Latin and South America.
And as I said: North America encompasses AMERICA, CANADA, MEXICO and GREENLAND. So it doesn't fix the problem.
I do think, however, if we just referred to ourselves as American Nationals we'd fix it, as said above.

Lets start a list of all the stuff we call Mexicans. I bet its a longer list.

I really don't give a shite what the Mexicans want to call us. The fact that they are risking their lives by the thousands to get into our country says it all.

It's one thing to call someone by a pejorative, it's another thing to go at length to try and ascribe a different nationality specifically because it makes you feel small.
Especially by subverting your own country's title.
United States of America.
United States of Mexico.
United States refers to America.

I don't care too much, but I just wanted to point out the silly contortion going on to avoid calling us ''America'' because Mexico feels small.
