No matter what anyone on here says, he's absolutely right.

I like the candid way he seems to be speaking with media. It's interesting to see inside the wave machine to see what makes it roll.

Motivating players (or maybe selecting players that can be motivated) is ultimately the responsibility of the coaching staff.
If the team is unmotivated, that's on the coach. There's no one in the country who would rather have a guy who won't put in the work but was highly ranked in HS than the dude 20 spots behind him who lives for the weight room and the practice field.

I've always said the same thing myself about these so-called 5* athletes. They come in and expect everything given to them instead of a 2* T. Mathieu that worked extra to prove himself on the field. That tells you Saban's job is that much tougher coaching up a bunch of self entitled babies.

Some of our best players at Alabama have been those underrated guys. That 2009 team was full of them. But it takes all kinds to build a title team. Sometimes it works and sometimes it's more of a struggle. 2010 and 2013 are examples of entitlement winning out.

Refreshing perspective, the recruit worship gets old.

Sure, but that job gets exponentially harder when the team has won 3 of the last 4 NC's. Motivating people to stop losing is easy. Motivating them to keep winning isn't.

I didn't have a problem with his perspective. It sounds pretty spot on.

I disagree about 2013. They lost a heartbreaker to AU and then they just werent in it for the Sugar Bowl. It was championship or bust for that team, but I dont think entitlment had much to do with it.
eta: Actually, AJ said himself that entitlement was a factor. Im an idiot.

Doesn't help matters that national media, such as espn, air and televise the HS All-Star games to a point of players being treated like a celebrity. The kids deserve some spotlight and being rewarded, but media these days overdoes it IMO.

I pretty much agree with everyone's sentiments, but I actually believe the all-star games and camps help put more substance into the recruiting rankings. It used to be all so subjective and based on film alone. Now the best are going against the best in a competitive format so the real players rise and the paper players fall. Sean White is a perfect example of the new recruiting system, and getting rewarded for solid play.

I have no problem with the camps/all-star games. My biggest gripe with the highly ranked recruits is the press conference hat circus. Just this year we've had one recruit who was a long time commit to his school decommit two days before his press conference only to recommit during the conference. Then there was another recruit who committed during the UAAA game only to flip a week later and enroll at another school. Heck, Bama even had a kid who had a school wide commitment ceremony only to decommit 12 days later. He later recommitted to Bama. It's a circus.
It makes me thankful for recruits like Marlon Humphrey who announce their decision on twitter after they've thought through it. He had the opportunity to have as many cameras as he wanted, but he chose to do a low key announcement.
It must be difficult to coach kids who think they deserve to see the field just because they had some stars next to their names during high school. Even more difficult when a majority of your team consists of these kids.

While I agree with his comments, there is a strong correlation with team recruiting ranking leading up to championships so don't pretend that having 5 star recruits doesn't matter, it does. As such Bama will likely win another NC sooner rather than later. Saban will point to the downfall at the end of the 2013 season and say something like: this is what can happen when you become complacent. Saban is obviously a great super dedicated coach but he has won 3 out of the last 5 NC's as much because of the talent of his players as his coaching from my perspective.

It's just as much the fault of fans who overdo it with twitter, etc. building up the colossal egos of these guys, granted, most people wouldn't know about any of these recruits without the recruiting services.
And the coaches too. They're the ones calling or texting these kids 24/7 (also promising and paying?) .
