Cornerback
Jonathan Mincy - sure fire starter will end his career as a better cover corner than Davis
Joshua Hosely - moves back to corner where we need him and where he is best, potentially leave him on an island
Depth
Jonathan Jones - Beast on special teams this year, kid is lighting fast and should provide immediate depth
*Trovon Reed - Has an advantage of athleticism and game time experience over those listed below. But let's face it he's kind of a pussy
Johnathan Ford - Moved from running back after DB depth issues, didn't play but could stay at this position
Kalvarez Bessent - needs a year of seasoning according to AUC
Nick Ruffin - needs a year of seasoning according to AUC
T.J. Davis - haven't heard much of him lately
Kamyron Melton - Project that still barely weighs 170 according to roster

Safety
Jermaine Whitehead - Exceptional play this year should be a great one by the end of next season
Brandon King - Didn't see the field much this year, even though he was brought in as a juco to play right away. I see him playing a lot in 2014 however
Depth
Derrick Moncrief - You could switch him with Brandon King as starter, after all he is the #1 JUCO safety. Could also play cornerback
Stephen Roberts - Flexible enough to play CB as well, Roberts is ready to contribute and should see the field in 2014
Khari Harding - only a sophmore but is he any good?
Mackenro Alexander - Played star will likely stay there

Overall this situation looks better than last years and is much needed. Our DBs were gassed on the final drive of that game which led to missed tackles and costly penalties. Please correct me if anything is wrong, this took longer than I had anticipated.

*edited to include T.Reed

Hopefully he works out better than King. He's huge, hope he has the speed to play safety.

DBs and finding a punter and kicker... my major concerns for 2014.

I do have faith in our defensive staff, though...

Hutchinson and Carlson will fill in nicely at the kicking positions

I think so too, but its hard to know how they'll perform in game situations... especially Carlson.... kicking is a lot about being cool under pressure.

Harbison and Smith like Holsey as a safety. Will be surprised if he makes the move back to corner.

I personally think Derrick Moncrief would benefit best from the STAR position (due to his size, tackling, and closing speed), but we have that current log-jam there with Robenson Therezie, Brandon King, and Mackenro Alexander.

FS Jermaine Whitehead
BS Derrick Moncrief
STAR Robenson Therezie, Brandon King
MLB Kris Frost
WLB Cass McKinzy, Justin Garrett (back-up)

FWIW, I love Brandon King's measurables, but where could we really put him? I hope he sees more time next year. He's absolutely a freak athlete. Runs a 4.4, huge, and played defensive end, linebacker, and safety in JuCo.

I remember hearing during his recruitment that he had natural hips for a CB and could stay with anybody in coverage.

But I just think he's too soft to play defense. I have a hard time imagining Trovon Reed playing with any type of mean streak.

Therezie doesn't have the fluid hips Ellis Johnson and co like at corner. Pretty sure fluid hips is the word EJ used

Justin Garret I see as a LB/2nd Star depending on game situation

Kamryn Melton is going to be good just needs a year in a S&C program (this will be his first off season)

Doesn't have the hips to play corner for any DC. Did a nice job covering the slot against FSU though. Guy is pretty good. Saw him matched up with Benjamin a couple of times and thought he did great.

Needs Work...
Scoring Defense 47th and SEC 9th
Rushing Defense 63rd and SEC 10th
Passing Defense 102nd and SEC 13th
Total Defense 87th and SEC 12th
Interceptions 53rd and SEC 4th
Opp Long Passing Play 102nd
Jameis Winston's English
Opp Long Rushing Play 106th
Opp 1st Down SEC 12th
Kickoff Coverage SEC 12th

Good
Opp 3rd Down Conversions 13th and SEC 1st
Opp 4th Down Conversions SEC 10th
Opp Redzone Conversions 10th and SEC 2nd
Sacks 31st and SEC 3rd
Tackles for a Loss 23rd
Passes Defended 24th

Kicking btw 71% or SEC 9th

Still went 12-2 with that. If coaching is the reason Auburn went from 3-9 to 12-2 in a year, then I'm excited what Auburn can do this off season.

I like Therezie at the star position and want Garrett to be a LB mixed with a second star. Garrett would probably be our best LB next year

I wouldn't count Garrett as part of the LB corps until he makes it to our first game next year healthy. Sucks for him, but he seems to have chronic injury problems.

I just hope he makes it out of spring ball healthy.
