Was the hype around LSU's basketball team legit?

During the preseason I saw a lot of LSU in the top 3-4 in the conference and one of the few locks to make the tourney. I know it's still early, but losses to UMass, URI, and NC State aren't exactly impressive. Tennessee hasn't really impressed either. Why was there so much hype surrounding this LSU squad? Was there a coaching change or a good recruiting class? I honestly don't follow LSU basketball all that closely so I would have no clue as to the answer of either of those questions.

People had them around 3-4 because no one knew if Arky had fixed their road troubles and if Mizzou could replace the guys they lost. Tennessee had some bad early losses, but seemed to have turned things around.

Yeah but that doesn't really answer why people had them as locks for the tourney. I don't remember them being very good last year so what was so earth shaking about this year?

The women lost to Nc st, not the men
We had a solid core of guys returning (JOB, Hickey, Stringer) with a full year in JJ's system, plus a couple of big recruits (Martin and Mickey)
They finished strong last year too. Won 9 of their last 14 after starting 0-4 in SEC play.

UMass actually has the #6 RPI as of today.
And we will still sweep Arky.

Until this week LSU had only lost two Umass and Memphis who are both ranked teams and they were very close games. Since coming back from the break this week LSU has looked terrible shooting and rebounding the ball. They look nothing like the team that played in the old spice classic. They could just be going through a mini slump or maybe they were playing beyond themselves earlier in the season. I guess we will see.

Hell no...never was. I said before the season I'd be shoced if this team makes the tourney. I still will be. They have talent now, but as you can see the people already on the team aren't where they need to be. Hickey and O'bryant may be two of the most overrated athletes to ever wear the purple and gold (O'bryant especially).

It's not 'hype' when you're predicted in the top 4
people just said they'd improve
which they have
Tennessee has a good basketball team
LSU is still better than Arkansas too

I think it's still too early to tell. Good news for them- UT isn't that bad of a loss but I know the concern lies in how they looked losing it. They're definitely going to have to play much better ball going forward than they have this past week.

From what I've seen, LSU still lacks quality depth.
It's only two losses and there are a lot of games left to be played, but LSU has definitely laid an egg the last two games.
They absolutely cannot go and lose at South Carolina this weekend though.

yea they settled for a lot of one-on-one play
didn't pass the ball nearly enough
too many contested jumpers and just jumpers altogether
JJ gonna have to fix some of that, but it's January

Neither do I but I see Arkansas posters are suddenly quite interested in LSU basketball.

Of course we are interested in LSU basketball.
It's basketball season and Arkansas, LSU, and Tennessee will be fighting for an NCAA berth out of the league.

Honestly I think right now we're interested in everyone's basketball. Of course we start road games tonight against those lowly aggies so it's possible we may not care nearly as much tomorrow.

Of course we are interested in any above average SEC basketball team that loses a game so we can troll them.

We haven't even played nc state.
But yeah, last two games are going to change our expectations for the year.

Yea, I did. It wasn't pretty.
Changed the channel with about 5 minutes to go in the 2nd half.
UT has a good ball team.
