Why is Auburn called the family?

I've read where Auburn is referenced as 'The Family'. But not real sure how they got that nickname.

It's a small conservative school with a predominant white Christian populous and fan base. It refers to the close connection Auburn fans are supposed to have for one another. It's essentially a different way of saying fanbase and beats saying "Auburn Nation" like Gator Nation.
