The Battle of Blackjack was fought in Kansas in 1856 between northern abolitionists and southern border ruffians (ie. Missourians) five years before the Battle of Fort Sumter.
Many credible and respected historians credit the Battle of Blackjack (not the Battle of Fort Sumter) as the first battle of the American Civil War, or rather, the first battle in the War of Northern Aggression.
You can go ahead and thank Missouri for lighting the powder keg against the northern marauders. You can thank us for setting the stage for secession.
You're welcome.
NOTE: Mark Twain once upon a time famously remarked, "The Missouri black flagging ruffians never formally surrendered unlike the Confederates. In Missouri, surrender occurred when a native son was decapitated by the sword or axe. Only then could a Missourian be considered 'surrendered'."

Or we could deconstruct Bacon's Rebellion, Lord Dunmore's Proclamation, the NW Ordinance, the Great Compromise, yada, yada, yada - none which have a damn thing to do with Missouri, and even if they did, who the hell thinks it's cool to have started a civil war?

These fake southerners in the new south don't like to reshuffle their deck, finding out that Missouri is a real Confederate state is too much for them to handle.
The truth is, a lot of these new southerners are really the great grandsons and daughters of carpetbagger scum that moved south during the reconstruction.

The Missouri black flagging ruffians also never formally surrendered unlike some Confederacies I know.
In Missouri, if you were decapitated you were considered to have surrendered.
