SEC is Down?

There were a few posters on here a few weeks ago declaring that this is a down year for the SEC. This week for the first time ever, EIGHT teams from one conference were ranked in the top 25 in the AP poll. The #1 team in the country is also from the SEC. A Yahoo draft forecast has NINE SEC players projected in the top 15.
Instead of asking if the SEC is down, a better question might be...is it better than ever?

people say the SEC is down every. single. year.

The SEC has had some unfortunate losses that make the argument for people looking to make the argument.
Tenn by a bazillion
Arkansas to Rutgers
Florida to Miami
UGA to Clemson
LSU to Clemson (last year)
If USC were to beat Clemson or Florida were to beat FSU then those would be worthwhile wins before bowl season to make the counterargument.
And the players drafter argument is not worth much of anything. North Carolina had a bunch of first round players a couple years ago when their team was terrible.

Everyone else is not down.
The simple truth is the SEC has put so many more players in the NFL in the last 3-4 years than any other conference. That exodus of great players has caused a lot of SEC teams to be a little younger than normal. Even with that, those young players are stepping up and the SEC teams are getting a little better each week. And, even with this youth, the SEC remains the dominant conference in CFB. If ever there was a year for other conferences to step up, this was it. As of now, only the ACC with Clemson and Fla State seem to be wanting to do that. The Pac 12 has one team that belongs in the conversation and that's Oregon. Stanford and UCLA would get curb stomped by several SEC teams. Let's not kid ourselves with them.

If the SEC is down, then the rest of the nation is garbage.

Depends on how you want to look at it. Last year the SEC had a few more elite teams, this year the SEC still has elite teams but it has more balance.
Also, a few other teams have stepped up this year outside the SEC to make it so it isn't quite as overwhelming as last year. Last year it felt like there were at least 4 different teams from the SEC that would have destroyed ND in the NC game for instance. This year if you look at a team like Oregon it is hard to say that and objectively Oregon is capable of beating any SEC team (not saying they would but they could). There were also more paper tigers last year like Kansas State and Florida State (FSU is a different team now with a real QB). Still a lot of season to play though.
Then you also have the struggles of UF and UGA, both of which have lost high profile Non Conference games.

Of course unlike most of the SEC only UGA, UF, & UT have played Top end OOC games. I realize it's not OM & Bamas fault their 2 OOC are a little down.
But to answer the Question , The SEC is not down , but the top teams in the PAC and ACC have risen. The SEC is clearly the best conference with the most balance.
However , I don't think the Best team is in the SEC , Oregon. I do think the 2-4 at least is , LSU, UGA (when healthy ) , Bama , in that order . But because of losses and future in conference losses , SEC won't be in the BCSNCG.
And in return the rest of the country will say we are down, but I don't really care about their opinion.

The SEC is not down, it will not be down until the demographics of the country change.
Other conferences might get better and close the gap, but that is about it.

The SEC is definitely down. I don't think the teams at the top are as good as they were last year. From what I've seen, only 2 teams have improved on the whole (Auburn and Missouri). Lucky for us, most of the rest of the nation is garbage. College football as a whole has been pretty shitty the past five years or so.

If Alabama wins, it's down. It really is that simple.

No, but FSU, Clemson, Oregon, and Ohio State are all legit BCS champion contenders. I think that's probably why a lot of people are saying that the SEC is "down" because it is wholly conceivable that some non-SEC school wins the national title.
