that's crazy low. I know alabama isn't a great state for HS recruiting (at least compared to others in the SEC) and bama can recruit nationally due to their success, but that's still an insanely low number. You'd assume all the walkons and scout teamers would be from in state.
Alabama is America's team, bro.
J/k - I was really surprised by that low of a number too.

If you go to rolltide.com, the "official" roster there is for 107 player (which includes walk-ons), and only 33 are from the state of Alabama.
This doesn't seem sustainable once Saban leaves

Auburn:
(45/116) ~39% from Alabama
(26/116) ~22% from Georgia
ETA: fixed the numbers

33 out of 120 on our current roster are from Arkansas.
23 of those are on scholarship.
So 27.5% of our total roster is from Arkansas and 27.1% of our scholarship players are from Arkansas.

I wonder if that hurts them in the long run? A lot of recruiting is due to relationships with highschool coaches. Saban is great but he's going to be gone in a few years. Will other younger coaches create local pipeline that inhibit bamas recruiting?

Saban loves to recruit 4 and 5 stars, and Alabama does not have as many as say Georgia, Florida, Texas etc has....is why the disparity..

Crazy that we have more kids on our roster from Hawaii than Mississippi.

Alabama will always be able to recruit real well within the state if they so choose unless a coach just totally and/or intentionally ticks off the high school coaches. But Saban isn't burning bridges with the local coaches or anything. Everyone realizes that he is recruiting at such a high level that he will be going out of state for the majority of the kids.
Oh, and it might be 35 kids from in the state. I counted them pretty fast and may have missed one or two, but the percentage is still close to the same.

Maybe a small impact, but Alabama should always be okay recruiting Alabama kids.

Bama has 4 instate recruits out of 21 for 2014.

The state of Alabama is usually top heavy in talent. Not every class is like 2000 or 2008.

For Mizzou it is 45% (60 kids) from Missouri and 27% (36 kids) from Texas.

Lots of these teams recruit neighboring states too. It's a slightly different dynamic for LSU to recruit Texas or Auburn to recruit Georgia than it is for an SEC team to recruit California or New York. Distance is often a factor that diminishes when recruiting in your neighbors. Hell, Atlanta is closer to Auburn than Tuscaloosa is.
