Nevermind the fact that Johnny played 2.5 quarters against said Arky team. I'm sure that tPOS Vaught always let Archie stay in so he could get his numbers

We are so lucky to have you here to tell us these things. After all, Archie has spent the last 40 years in New Orleans living a rather public life, I was never aware that he was part of New Orleans' underground drug culture. Thanks for enlightening us.

I watched some of it. I don't worship these guys like you do and I highly doubt Archie Manning was the pure-in-heart saint that he is portrayed to be. Eli was a cokehead at Ole Miss and Archie probably wasn't all that different. The media paints prominent people how they want and dictates the narrative to a T.

I remember Peyton's comments about Manziel at the passing academy, and it was basically "Eli was twice as bad". I work with some coon arse safety guys, one of which is from Thibadaux... he basically prefaced all his Johnny Manziel hate with "Johnny Manziel and all those counselors just get wasted and frick all the local girls." Which is exactly what happened that night(AJ included, he wasn't in the hotel room either). Just because you like to get fricked up and have a good time, whether your name is Johnny, Archie, or Eli, you aren't a bad person.

The only reason we think about people of the past with rose colored glasses is because the media wasn't all that pervasive back then and video cameras were basically non-existent. People also didn't expect athletes to be Jesus back the either like they do now. Athletes were simply given far more leeway in their personal lives than now.

Well said.

I've lost track of how many times I've heard a retired sports legend express how glad he is that he didn't play in an era of 24 hour media. We love to think that guys "back in the day" had so much more character than the young punks running around today, but that's naive. They sowed their wild oats just like the rest of us.

To be fair, I doubt Archie was a cokehead like Eli...coke wasn't the in thing back in his day. Just saying, I would bet that he was just as wild as his son was.

Also the media would get fired for reporting non-sports related news a lot of the time. The media used to be on the same planes as the 90s Cowboys, some of them even went to the white house.

Archie Manning was obviously a great quarterback and I can see the comparison to Manziel for sure, I apologize for the shots taken by some guys at Archie because he seems to be an upstanding individual, that being said, you can't blame A&M fans for getting defensive when on the first page of the thread JFF starts getting bashed left and right by some Ole Miss fans, it works both ways

Probably like all other small town Mississippi kids. Brett Favre was throwing up at Falcons training camps, right?

The OP was literally ABOUT comparing the two. Why does everyone get their panties in a wad?

I'm sure Marcus Dupree never touched drugs at OU in the 80's

I am definitely not arguing that it does...i like to party as well. Just find it funny that Johnny is demonized for having any fun and these guys are treated like mother teresa. A buddy of mine who went to ole miss (who i trust) told me about Eli's coke habit...don't expect others to believe me or even care...but regardless, the kid was no better of a person that Johnny Manziel.

First college football game I ever saw in person was the famous 1969 Ole Miss-Alabama game. I was 7. Archie was the SEC's original Tebow,Cam Newton,Johnny Football __ fill in the blank. No telling how many "18" jerseys could have been sold if sporting good stores then were like they were now.(it was hard to find a replica jersey of the local team(s) then).

Incredible documentary. Only 'flaw' was they juxtaposed Ole Miss' 4-0 start in 1970 and Manning's injury making it look like Houston had won and ended the unbeaten season. They did not. Not because LSU wound up winning in a rout, but I was also surprised they may no reference to Archie's valiant effort in Tiger Stadium and again made it look like his next game out was vs Auburn in the Gator.

Still give it an A+.

It's one thing to be defensive. Some of the places gone in this thread are out of line. And that goes for any fan base trying to defend one of their guys who has gotten into trouble. Instead of admiting their guy has a problem (JFF, Jeremy Hill, etc), they attack players from other teams.

A&M fans get butthurt because some Ole Miss fan disses JFF, so their defense is that Archie must have been a cokehead. LSU fans get butthurt because an A&M fan disses Jeremy Hill, and their response is that JFF is a rich spolied cokehead. Those are childish and completely irrelevant defenses.

To compare Manziel and Archie as players is a totally legitimate conversation. Some of the personal comments made by several fans in this thread are out of bounds.

Haha my bad, I didn't mean to come off as whiny as it did, back to the original premise, I think it is a pretty accurate comparison, both guys had a lot of the same elusive qualities, hopefully JFF can lead us to a Sugar Bowl like Archie did for Ole Miss

What "problem" does Johnny have? This is what I don't get. The kid is an amazing football player, likes to party a bit and hang out with celebs, and away from the media spotlight spends some serious time hanging out with unfortunate kids.

Jeremy Hill has no respect for females and likes to cheap shot people while they are not looking outside of bars.

What "problem" does he have?

Never said Archie was a cokehead. Just a party animal (still is), but wasn't villainized for it.
