ETA - I'm not saying that A&M's offense is going to go to shite. I'm just saying that JFF himself kept you in a TON of games over the past two seasons.

Yes that is true, but could you be ignoring the talent we are stacking across the board on offense and defense???

Johnny was the perfect person at the perfect time to bridge the gap and keep us from a tough first two seasons and provide ridiculous recruiting momentum.

But David Ash could put up significant numbers with the freak talent/height/speed we are stacking on offense. It's going to be fun to watch a guy like Kyle Allen throwing to these guys...and watching us use our freak tight end and 5-star running backs more.
No D, Manziel injury, blatant horsecollar no call in front of official as we were driving into red zone after moving ball at will and would have had multiple timeouts and 45 sec or so left. I was pretty drunk and angry/depressed so things could be a bit fuzzy.

Oh but it wasn't the 3rd selection...

Auburn/UT was 3rd selection.

HTH.

I think Texas could beat ATM.

Lose JFF to injury and it's all downhill from there.

Ha, no way...our OLine and RB's would kill them. Worse than BYU.

Damn, that's actually a pretty selfish POS thing to do. Never thought about it like that. Johnny may not have the best relationship with his dad, but he loves his mother, unlike Archie.

Archie's dad kills himself - Goes back to school anyway.

Why wouldn't anyone go back to school? Wouldn't that make them more comfortable? To be surrounded by supportive friends, teamates, and coaches?

Did Archie befriend 5 yr olds battling cancer and spend hours at a time visiting for dinner and just hanging out to play with toys?

I want to preface what I'm about to say by pointing out that I don't think this necessarily qualifies as a "problem" that JFF has, and I only have secondhand information on isolated incidents to go on, so I don't want to come across as though I'm judging Manziel at all.

With all of that out of the way, some people could jump to the conclusion that Manziel wasn't disciplined much as a kid. I think that's a snap judgment, because who really knows? But I think people could get that impression from Thompson's article. Manziel apparently told his aunt to shut the hell up during a family dinner, and no one even corrected him. Supposedly, his dad kind of dreads playing golf with him because Manziel tends to fling his golf clubs around and lose his temper. For most people, it's kind of strange that Paul Manziel punched JFF's friend in the groin and then high-fived JFF. I know there are all kinds of ways for fathers to interact with their sons, but some people could see that as Paul being more of a friend to JFF than a father. Like I said, this is a snap judgment based on very little real information, but I think that has at least something to do with the way people react to JFF.

Sorry for the length of this post.

I agree with you, that article definitely threw me off and I ended up coming to a similar conclusion, that he just comes from a crazy family who probably could have disciplined him more. I think his dad may be a bit crazy even. That being said, I thought I heard Thompson apologized to the Manziel family for how they were unfairly portrayed after the piece was published, I could be wrong.

But if the article has much merit at all, how can people hate a kid for acting like pretty much any kid would act if they grew up in a similar fashion? There are plenty of "under priveleged" athletes who act like completely self-righteous, spoiled divas. I get the feeling the University and coaches have taken a bit of a "parental" role over the past year to help give Johnny better guidance. But to act like he's got this huge problem is just silly. He comes off as cocky and seems to have a shoot-from-the-hip mentality, but by all accounts from people who have met him, his teamates, celebs, and kids he has formed relationships with...he is a cool, nice, genuine dude. Maybe he just cant stand his family? Maybe his dad is an a-hole.

Can't count how many times this has been said. I am sure he is trembling over the thought of playing you guys.

That's what concerns me. There are very public signs of an issue, and the last thing anyone wants (Rant Idiots exclused) is to see this kid who has a bright future throw it away ala Marinovich.

bullshite. Dont act like you are concerned for the kid. Everyone here hates him. You just don't like him...be a man and admit it. Faking "concern" is bush league.

Michael Jordan partied his balls off and was confident/cocky just like Johnny. A ton of world class athletes are similar. He and many others just didn't have media and social media trying to tear him down constantly and fabricate crazy soap opera stories for ratings out of complete non-stories like Johnny having beers thrown at him at a frat party or doing the money sign during a game (that all of his teamates do).
And back to OP, Archie was great for his time, but Johnny is much better. That just shouldn't even be up for debate. I think Archie is a good man and seems like a great father. Ole Miss is lookin pretty solid this year and the trajectory of their program is headed in the right direction.
Never said Archie was a cokehead. Just a party animal (still is), but wasn't villainized for it.

Instead of admiting their guy has a problem (JFF, Jeremy Hill, etc), they attack players from other teams.

What "problem" does Johnny have? This is what I don't get. The kid is an amazing football player, likes to party a bit and hang out with celebs, and away from the media spotlight spends some serious time hanging out with unfortunate kids.

Jeremy Hill has no respect for females and likes to cheap shot people while they are not looking outside of bars.

What "problem" does he have?
quote:

I remember Peyton's comments about Manziel at the passing academy, and it was basically "Eli was twice as bad". I work with some coon arse safety guys, one of which is from Thibadaux... he basically prefaced all his Johnny Manziel hate with "Johnny Manziel and all those counselors just get wasted and frick all the local girls." Which is exactly what happened that night(AJ included, he wasn't in the hotel room either). Just because you like to get fricked up and have a good time, whether your name is Johnny, Archie, or Eli, you aren't a bad person.

I am definitely not arguing that it does...i like to party as well. Just find it funny that Johnny is demonized for having any fun and these guys are treated like mother teresa. A buddy of mine who went to ole miss (who i trust) told me about Eli's coke habit...don't expect others to believe me or even care...but regardless, the kid was no better of a person that Johnny Manziel.
To be fair, I doubt Archie was a cokehead like Eli...coke wasn't the in thing back in his day. Just saying, I would bet that he was just as wild as his son was.

It's unfortunate that this thread, like so many on the SEC Rant these days, almost immediately degraded into another Texas A&M pissing contest. There are so few rational conversations here anymore.

Yep, all you have to do is look at the first few posts by Ole Miss fans. You can thank them for the immediate derail.
I watched some of it. I don't worship these guys like you do and I highly doubt Archie Manning was the pure-in-heart saint that he is portrayed to be. Eli was a cokehead at Ole Miss and Archie probably wasn't all that different. The media paints prominent people how they want and dictates the narrative to a T.
While they have moved some guys around on D and we were able to hold our last opponent (albiet SMU) to just one garbage time TD, we are still very young and inexperienced and I am expecting to give up a ton of yards and for guys to make silly mistakes throughout the game. I wouldn't touch TAMU -17 personally. Our D is still a huge liability until proven otherwise.
Johnny is way better than Archie ever was. And he is doing more impressive things against much better athletes. MUCH better. 42 points and almost 600 yards of offense against Bama is FREAKISH. No way any of the Mannings in their prime get close to that.

And I am sure Archie Manning had plenty of skeletons in his closet and liked to party just a little bit, but TMZSPN and social media weren't around to tear prominent guys apart back in the day. I wonder if Archie had friendships with children battling cancer and would take hours out of his day to go to their house to play with race cars outside of the media eye?
