Was just thinking:

UT of course is/was a rival.
We had LSU rivalry for a while, which we got back.
Arky of course.

Am I missing anyone? Past or Present that was a real rivalry?

past Baylor definitely.

I never considered Tech a rival but I think it's fair to say in the last decade or so they became one. In fact, in the early 90s, I'd say

1. Texas
2. LSU
3. Arkansas/Baylor

I wouldn't have called anyone beyond that a rival of any sort.

Baylor was for a solid two years, but by "rivals" I mean I just wanted to put them in their place real bad during that time period (which we did).

Tech's definitely on there.

Yeah I would flip Baylor and Tech. Baylor was that little brat that tried desperately to be relevant. Tech was kinda the same way, but at least they were competitive during the Leach era, and that rivalry really escalated.

Plus, Tech fans sucked, so it was always fun to beat those assclowns

We have played Baylor more times than any other school save for Texas. They are the only other school we have over 100+ games against and they are also just 90 miles away.

Just b/c we dominate the series doesn't mean they aren't a rival.

They just happen to be a rival we pimp slapped for years and years.

Look at it this way, remember how beating Texas seemed to make it feel like it was an ok year regardless of how the season shook out? Well, Baylor is like that reversed. If we lost to them the season was ruined.

Hell, they are the school our guys threatened to go blow up with a cannon back in the day.

As a former Waco resident, I agree about baylor being a rival.

As much as it pains me to admit.

Tech and Baylor for sure. They are instate competition we played every year. I don't know why people care so much about labeling someone a rival.

Was just having a discussion at lunch with a Baylor grad, LSU grad, and Arky grad. All claiming to be our #2 rival behind UT.

Just curious what you guys thought about it, since obviously my sole opinion would not sway the conversation either way.

Texas, Texas, then Texas.

Really I never considered Baylor much of a rival, since A&M always won (even though Baylor miraculously won the conference the year before I started). But Dr RC's "Hell, they are the school our guys threatened to go blow up with a cannon back in the day." deserves some credit, so I'd put them third.

2nd is for me clearly Tech. We made the trip to Lubbock twice and I'll never go again for any reason. The entire town is populated by lunatics. It would not bother me in the least if a meteor wiped out Lubbock. I was severely conflicted about who to pull for in last week's Tech vs. TCU game. It was only a question, of course, because of Kingsbury.

LSU is even before my time, but I think this will develop into something pretty special.

I honestly think it depends on when you went to school. I'm not sure there was a point that Arky was but I dunno. We played them a lot for the conference when I was in school and just before. The first game I went to after being accepted was Arky @ Kyle in '89 on Thanksgiving (yep, we played them on T-day or maybe the Sat after, not Texas). That game was for the SWC title.

Personally, I never felt a strong hatred towards Arky. We competed but not like I feel towards quite a few others. LSU and Texas were pure hate when I was in school though. Darren Lewis got tossed in the LSU game my fish year for throwing a punch 2 minutes into the game (he was retaliating imo but ce la vi). That's just how those games rolled.

We had a rival. It was TU. We do not have a rival now.

However, we have many second tier rivals - Arky, LSU, TT, Baylor, Bama, etc.

I don't think we can have a rivalry with Bama. The two schools share too much history. We seem to have a good respect for each other, led to some pretty rustled LSU posters this past week though.

I have a tendency to mix "rivalry" and "nostalgia." I am nostalgic about most of the SWC schools. Our true rival was t.u., but I love playing old SWC schools.

For example, my maternal grandfather was an old Ag (Class of '25). He and my grandmother went to the 1936 A&M@SMU game for their honeymoon. I think about that every time we play SMU.

Just about every SWC schools brings back great memories when I think about them. Hell even UH had a great one. We were playing them in the Astrodome in 1988, and they had to call a TO because of our crowd noise.

Let's be patient with the rivalry thing. A very natural rival will emerge in its time.
