I noticed that not all scheduling formats are the same for the regionals with regards to afternoon vs. evening games. 13 of the 16 regionals have the #2 vs #3 teams playing in the afternoon slot, followed by #1 vs #4 in the evening yet the other 3 regionals have this reversed. Couple of questions:

1) Who decides the order, the host team or the NCAA?

2) LSU fans--Your regional is one of the 3 with the #1 team (LSU) playing in the afternoon (3 PM EST). Are you cool with this or would you prefer an evening game to open with?

As far back as I can remember, every regional we've hosted we've always played as the #1 seed in the evening on opening night.

I don't really get it. We normally play the night game IIRC. I was confused when I saw we'd be playing the afternoon game.

Fans obviously prefer evening games for 2 reasons

1. Cooler at night
2. Especially on a friday, people are still at work at 2 PM CST

For the players though, playing in the afternoon game on friday means more rest than the team who wins playing at night on friday.

Was just curious why most are the same yet a few were different. I can see the point about players preferring earlier games for more rest. So the hosts choose the order the opening day?

The reason is much more simple and pragmatic than rest for the players. The LSU athletic office knows that the stadium will be full for the LSU game regardless of when it's played. There are hopes that more people will stay for the 2 vs. 3 game in the evening than would show for that game were it played at the 2:00 p.m. time slot.

The host team gets to pick what slot they play for the opening round. I think LSU has a history of doing this, but not sure. I would defer to an LSU fan on that one.

But somebody decides to do it almost every year. 3 seems to be higher than normal though. I always thought it was to give your players more rest between games but the poster above noting the attendance for the 2/3 game at night probably has a point too.

Haven't we heard enough about LSU teams playing day games in Baton Rouge?

The host team decides it. Most want to play at night so more fans show up. For LSU and a few others though they choose to play the first game because the stadium will be full and there's more time to rest before Saturday.

More rest time whether you win or lose. I seem to remember Virginia usually playing the first game. I know they are this week.

I think we'll still get a fine crowd at 2pm, but it will really help the night game crowd.

This will be one instance where the teams coming in for the regional actually bring a good crowd. ULL will come in droves. And I was at a regional at Ole Miss when SHSU played there and travelled pretty well to Oxford, you'd think they'd do as well or better being that much closer to Baton Rouge.

CPM was quoted on the radio yesterday as saying he prefers the afternoon game due to an experience he had while at N.D. He said they had the nite game, rains came, pushed the first game back, making his N.D. team have to wait & wait to play, ending up playing late at nite. He also said by playing the first game, if LSU wins, it gives his coaching staff a chance to scout the other two teams; it's hard to scout that afternoon game as the staff is busy preparing for its own team's game later. Skip used to prefer the first game as well, claiming if LSU was to lose that nite game, the players had to come back early the next morning & get ready to play after not near enough sleep. CPM said he requested ESPN allow LSU the first game & they honored his request. So, apparently, as long as there is no objections, the home team HC gets to pick what time his team plays that first game.

Heard Skip give this reason as to why he liked playing the first game of a regional.

If someone has to play way into the night I want it to be my opponent for the next game.
