maybe its not whos arguing, but the fact that is what most people perceive (media, other fans, etc). people freaking rejoice when an SEC team loses because of the attitude (mostly perpetrated by ESPN) that the sec is supposed to be invincible

Dude, you must've had yell practice this morning because you're on a roll
For all this talk of SEC dominance, we would do well to remember that ESPN is a fickle mistress ruled by ratings and ad revenue :coughtebowcough: Should a team like Notre Dame, USC, or even Texas ever return to true dominance (i.e. fire Kiffin & Mack) it will be interesting to see where they rest their allegiance

True. It has become a circular argument.
The SEC is wildly successful. They observe that success. Other conferences attempt to downplay that success so SEC fans get defensive and trumpet their success even louder. Because of that they are perceived as arrogant.
Honestly with the success in the last 10 years that perception is unavoidable. Comes with the territory.

The other 6, not much of an argument (well maybe 2007 with the 8 2 loss teams or whatever it was)

Jack Arute made an excellent comparison today of the perceived arrogance of the SEC to the once very real arrogance of Michigan-Ohio State. He, as a member of the media, had it shoved down his throat in the 80s that they were the only two teams that mattered. So it's not just an SEC phenomenon. He said he lived through it every year. He's a pretty unbiased figure.

yep. thats where the perception lies. people try to downplay the SECs run and SEC fans get defensive about it. then ESPN knowing damn well the entire south will watch the prime time alabama, florida, LSU, etc game will pimp up those teams and or game. not saying they dont deserve it, cause most of the time they do, but that is what happens.
i agree that the distinction of "best conference" is warranted. but it just gets annoying seeing ESPN pump up programs like miss state last year when everyone knew damn well they werent as good as their rankings suggested

This is kind of where Stoops' arguments came from. He agrees they have great teams at the top, but doesn't think Auburn, Arky, Tenn, Kentucky, MSU in 2012 could beat any of the good teams in the country (he's probably right)
The B1G played somewhat well against the SEC in New Years Bowls, and it was a historically bad year for the B1G and a historically good year for the SEC. Yes I know UGA and USCe won, and the SEC went 2-1 but all 3 were competitive into the 2nd half

Meh. ESPN will play up whoever to get ratings. We forget how fricking ridiculously they hyped up USC just a few years ago. Ohio St. - Michigan.
There was a huge campaign to keep Florida out in 06 and of course Auburn was left out in 04.

This is what began the SEC's dominance as it caused a rallying cry within the conference and forced the rest of the country to pay attention to what was going on down south soo. . .
Thank you, You're Welcome

well yea as a whole ESPN will obviously hype up anyone to get the ratings. and knowing that so many people want to see the SEC lose, and so many people in the south will tune into any prime time SEC game, they will pump those games up and create the perception of invincibility.
auburn got screwed in 04, but that was before the run started. florida had a lot of resistance, but once again that was before the run started since they are the ones that actually started it
and yea i mean there are always the programs that will get pump up by ESPN (usc, nd, mich. tOSU) and whenever the SEC run ends, you will probably see the sec hype machine end as well. but at this moment, there is a pretty big hype machine that only plays into the perception of sec invincibility

That's kind of hard to control, especially when other conferences start the conversation with "the SEC is overrated, etc.".

Many of the weak programs in football are the SEC's strong teams in basketball or baseball, so I understand their pride in the conference.

Is the SEC Becoming Too Arrogant?
Part of that stems from ESPN doing an informal conference champion/showdown point system (late 90's I think), pitting conference success against each other. Firmly taking root in the SEC, before this current run, is probably cultural. I've never heard a 'PAC 8' chant, SWC chant, Big 10 chant, etc. ever. ESPN is a pimp getting his harem to earn as much as as possible...and doing well at it.
Going into 2013 I don't see an SEC run at all, I see an UA run just like I saw in late seventies, Miami in late 80's, NU in mid 90's.
Arrogant...maybe. Misguided...definitely.
