I want to talk about this game, x's and o's, I want to talk about it with those who know Clampsin best... the gamecock board.
I've requested access here-
LINK
In the meantime,
Where did LSU go wrong, where did South Carolina go right?
I'm not worried about UGA's offense, we are returning everyone.
I'm more worried about our relatively young defense, several of which will be starting their first game against Clampsin. Normally, UGA has a few cupcakes to start the season, which South Carolina used to be, years ago, but gamecocks have gotten really good so it's no longer a cupcake game for week two, as has been exemplified the last 3 years.
No time for UGA's young defense to gel, they've got to hit the ground running vs Clemson in the opener, on the road in Tater Valley.

A bunch of 3&outs and a wore out D, basically. Even still, a first down to finish clock off, 2nd&2, Hill and Copeland available...run the ball Coach.

Can't answer for USC, but LSU went wrong by not blocking and not running the ball at the end of the game.

Clemson ran over 100 plays when LSU ran like 48. Keep your offense on the field, don't let Boyd establish a rythm.

Not letting Boyd establish a rhythm sounds good on paper, how do you do that in reality?
Keeping your offense on the field, I understand, but if you are UGA and know you can score a touchdown in two minutes, do you deliberately try to not score a touchdown, in the 1st 2nd 3rd quarters?
I understand clock management and the concept of "scoring too soon" in a close game in the 4th quarter...
But for the other 3 quarters, what will Thuga have to do defensively to make sure UGA is in that position in the 4th quarter, and not Clampsin?

South Carolina kept pressure on Boyd from start to finish. Plus we played press-man against their WRs and jammed them at the line of scrimmage all afternoon.
Most people picture Lattimore running the ball down Clemson's throat for the past three years but the fact of the matter is the only time Lattie faced Clemson was his freshman season. He was hurt his Sophomore and Junior seasons. Yet, we still just pounded them in the trenches and they wilted.
I was at a New Years Eve party watching the game, unfortunately surrounded by a ton of Clemson fans, (and a few Georgia fans), down around the border at I-20 and we all agreed LSU lost the game because Miles is a dumass. 3rd and two and he throws the ball twice? Honestly, he should have been fired after that game. We're still hearing about that bullshite here. Dabo actually went out on the recruiting trail and was telling recruits he plays a "basically SEC schedule" and beat Auburn and LSU this past year and will beat two more SEC teams this coming season. Their fans are still calling in radio shows talking about how they could have won the SEC West if they had played in the SEC. But Miles had to be a hard-headed dumass. I do not know how LSU fans put-up with his coaching when they have so much talent down there and such great tradition. If Saban went back there right now they would win four of the next five SEC Championships and probably three of the next four MNCs.
Finally, I've stated clearly why SC beats Clemson. But here is another reason, and I blame this on Miles as well, why LSU lost to Clemson ...

Woah, an actual football related question with very little flaming. I'm shocked
But seriously, After all of the dumb penalties and poor offensive drives, LSU was still in a position to ice the game by running the ball. UGA should be ok so long as they sustain some drives and keep the number of plays Clemson runs down.

quote:LSU's biggest mistake was probably just not preparing well enough for Clemson. Understandable considering it was a disappointing bowl draw. For Clemson, it was a huge matchup against an SEC power program and redemption to erase their performance against West Virginia. But, you gotta hand it to Clemson, they really did play a good game and Tahj played out of his mind. Even with Sammy out early, they were able to keep pressure on LSU's D and they didn't get off the field.
Where did LSU go wrong, where did South Carolina go right?
USC played one of the toughest schedules in the country this year in some of the toughest environments in college football. Going up to Clemson who feasted on weak ACC opponents wasn't very intimidating. Again, one of the bigger factors in the two games was that we just cared more. Playing in one of the fiercest rivalries in the country for the last game of the season is different than playing in a scrub bowl (for LSU).
Georgia is preparing for a very good next season and Richt will have the Dawgs ready for a huge opening game. But so will Dabo. Good thing Richt>>>Dabo. Should be one of the best games of the season and I'm glad y'all have to worry about them before getting us. Meanwhile, we have UNC to worry about too.
That will be one of the very few days in my life where I'll be a big DAWG fan.

I think keeping the ball away from Boyd is one thing - but the more important thing is to actually make him fear having the ball in his hands knowing full well he is the target when he does have the ball.
South Carolina ran the ball, and converted when needed. But the reason South Carolina beat Clemson so handedly this past season was Dylan Thompson throwing the ball around ... and Murray should experience similar success threw the air (sic: and pun intended). But you cannot underestimate their offense and Chad Morris, so you gotta play ball control and you gotta get pressure on Boyd while stopping the run.
Georgia is going to have their hands full in this game for exactly the reasons stated. It's the opener and Clemson is going to be a challenge, they are not your normal ACC pushover.

UGA will definatly have their hands full playing both of the South Carolina schools back to back. Unless Richt and Murray can prove that they can win "the big one" I doubt UGA will make it out of this one alive. Also I don't think many people are giving this Clemson team enough credit. Yes they play in the weak ACC, but this isn't Georgia Tech. This is one ACC team that knows the SEC quite well. They were able to dominate Auburn two years in a row, go toe-to-toe (mostly) with USCe, and was able to beat LSU, something that Carolina couldn't even do. So if I was a Dawg fan I'd be on my toes. Clemson is NO pushover.

They might not be a pushover...but they might be 7-5 in the SEC. Also UGA will score as often as they'd like. Our offense will be one of the best in the country next year. Will they score some points...absolutely. But not enough to win the shoot-out. The key, and reason, UGA will win this game is simple...we will score whenever we get the ball.

Not running the ball on 2nd&2 and then 3rd&2 with under 2 minutes left. One of the most frustrating things to watch in the Les era

We need to make one or two key stops in this game. That is what I'm looking for if we get a victory in Death Valley.

while I agree that CU is no pushover, they were soundly whipped by USCe in their home stadium (who had a backup QB the entire game), and a 7-point win over a 3-9 team at a neutral site is hardly 'dominating'.
I think this game will be a lot like UGA's opener against Ok State a few years ago... they'll play alright but eventually fall to the better team.

Don't get too comfortable with that mentality. If UGA's offense can't stay on the field then Clemson will give themselves many opportunities. And they can easily beat you big.
From what I've seen of them though, if you rattle Boyd early, he never fully recovers. He doesn't play terribly, but he'll throw that pass he shouldn't or scramble when he should have thrown, etc.

Both defenses won't be great. UGA will have lost too many starters or key 2 Deep guys and clemsux was terrible at efense last year and they lost most of their DB's for this year.
I think we'll see the O/U be 60+ a week before game time.

What are you saying has some truth, but the fact is South Carolina was just better than Clemson for the most part over the past 4 years. They have matched up with them very well.
LSU pounded Boyd all game, but the difference was that the LSU offense could not stay on the field, South Carolina was able to take advantage of a weak Clemson defense and chew up chunks of the game and keep Clemsons offense on the sideline and out of the flow of the game.
Its easy to get caught up in the defensive side of the game vs their offense but in the games I feel like Clemson has struggled in and esp in the Carolina games is that Clemson could not come close to stopping the other offense from doing whatever they wanted all game.
I think its more about him starting to press and the added pressure that comes from taking away chances. If your offense cant stay on the field its easier for the Clemson offense to get into a groove and establish what they do well. If they can't get the ball back quickly/very often Boyd starts to get frustrated and tends to make mistakes that they dont when things are going well.

South Carolina has dominated Clemson for four straight years ... domination, not even close.
And they were not playing a motivated LSU team, at night, in Baton Rouge coming off a loss the week before.
LSU didn't want to be in Atlanta and Les Miles is a dumass when he wants to be. But Miles always seems to get-up for Spurrier for some reason.
