Why was Ray Perkins disliked so much when he was head coach?

And what were some of the controversies surrounding himself and the various prestigious alumni and boosters at the time?

He removed the Bear's tower from the practice field. That was his first mistake.

Back in the 80's, my dad ran across some rednecks at Eagle Cove on the Black Warrior River that stole Ray's Alabama "A" logo yard sign with "the Perkins" written across the banner.
The rednecks traded it to my father for a case of beer. (It was a Sunday...)
I know that was a trashy thing to do, but it's a funny story.

Because he acted like he was Bear. He was arrogant and treated people like shite.

I was a student during the Perkins years. I simply didn't like the bastard. Perhaps its was because of Bryant... or the tower, but I just didn't like him at period.. at pressers or on the side lines.
I couldn't stand the "The Tide just keeps Perkin along" bumper stickers they tried to promote.
The slogan just says we are now mediocre and we accept it.
ETA - I hated Curry more.

It would have been impossible for anyone to follow coach Bryant at Alabama.

He followed the Bear, same reason a lot of coaches following legends are disliked. I'm not necessarily refering to Perkins here, but hopefully we learned our lessons from the "post-Bear" era for when Saban leaves and we are a little more patient this time around.

A lot of coaches have problems following legends, but Perkins acted like he was the legend. He really thought he was as good or better than the Bear.

Yep. He had a very abrasive personality that didn't mesh well.

Have heard story after story after story of people who dealt with him and have NEVER heard anything except that he was the biggest and most arrogant prick around. Not one redeeming story.

I decided what I said was too specific in this post.

Perkins came here after having to deal with the NFL media in NY City. So he had an edge, even before his first press conference. Not to mention the pressure and repetitive questions he had to deal with succeeding Coach Bryant.
One of the great things he should be remembered for regards the AU rivalry. Dye had been angling for moving the Iron Bowl to Auburn. Perkins, the coach and AD, told Dye and AU to FO, that he would never agree to move the IB from BHam.
And it didn't move as long as Perkins was here.
This had to change eventually, due to changing recruiting regulations regarding visits. But at the time, Perkins bitch-slapped Dye and the AU administration with his King-sized set of balls and put them in their place just when they were celebrating "Bo over the top" and some of the other 80's wins they enjoyed after CB.

Don't forget the way he fired people who had been in the program for a long time (Mal Moore, as example). A new HC should be able to make his own personnel decisions, but you don't fire someone who has been a lifer at a school by poking your head in their office on the first day and saying "We're not keeping you. You're fired".
