Ole Miss gave Houston Nutt a raise and extension after his first season too...

This isn't really news. Post when the figures are released.

Does Sumlin have any discernable downside to anybody ? I can't think of any. Experience maybe ?

Only downside is he has only 1 proven year in a legit conference. I am shocked the NFL already has a hard on for him.

You heard it here first, A&M is the new Ole Miss.

Plus, he seems to be just a likeable , simple guy. I think Aggie has something here. He may eclipse the estimable RC.

He turned down the Eagles job and Kelly is getting paid about 6.5 per year.

A&M is for some reason his dream job. He freaking sat on his hands and waited while the AD made up his mind; it was fairly obvious Sumlin was not the first choice, and was treated as such.

Easy to see why the League likes him.
Rooney Rule + exactly zero minority/AA GM's an HC's hired with double digit openings this year makes this cat a very desirable hire. I doubt he's around to groom Manziel's replacement though I see JFF playing three more years so take heart.
The market above him makes Sumlin more desirable than he perhaps otherwise would be.

This. Easily the most down to earth, passionate coach we've had since the heralded Jackie Sherrill days. Never met Jackie, but of all the coaches since, he's my favorite (and I made up my mind about him while he was still at UH).

Of course not. Bill Byrne wanted to keep Mike Sherman.

I don't necessarily disagree. I just hope you're wrong.

i read somewhere his salary is goin to jump from 2M to 2.4M /year and that he is still in the bottom half of salaries in the SEC. I don't know the link, but it said Sumlin was the second lowest paid coach in the SEC this year.

Sumlin made $2.4M this year because of incentives.
He'll earn between $3.1M and $3.6M from the new deal--numbers haven't been disclosed.

Pretty sure it's closer to low to mid $3MM annually
