Spencer Hall of EDSBS fame puts the Clowney hit into perfect words

quote:
I don't even know whether to give Vincent Smith credit for getting up. I will, but that's a personal choice left to you, because that kind of violence, even in a violent sport like football, is not part of the expected contract between you and the game. You expect contact, even violence, and always the pain of random injury. You do not expect a sasquatch on the hunt to apparate from thin air at 20 miles per hour. It is not part of anyone's plan ever, and Jadeveon Clowney is officially unreasonable to expect on a football field.
quote:
The helmet flying off isn't impressive by itself. Players know there is a certain way to knock them off, particularly if the player has a good stack of braids between him and the helmet's surface. It's the elevation, coming to rest 11 yards behind him. I watched a watermelon fly off a flatbed trailer on the interstate in an accident once; it looked a lot like this, minus the gory red explosion of it hitting the pavement. (Thank you, Vincent Smith, for not exploding into a red mist on this hit. No really; thank you so very much for not doing this.)
The whole article is hysterical, troubling, and succinct. Read it at some point today because it's perfect, like Clowney.

Hall even says this:
quote:
The part I still can't wrap my brain around: Clowney did that with about eight yards of running room. In the span of 24 feet, he gained enough momentum to do that to Vincent Smith. The equation is F=MA, and the numbers work out, I'm sure, but the brain can only do so much. It's a day later and my eyes still can't believe the spectacle and brutality of applied physics in football pads. When you have a variable like Jadeveon Clowney, though, sense is never, ever part of the equation.

For Smith, it's more like F=ML.

This is hit is going to be the reason why Murray decides to go to the NFL early.

I hope to God Clowney gets the flu next year.
For only that one Saturday when UGA plays USCe, I pray that he is throwing up everything he has eaten for the past week, just so that he is weakened enough for mortal men to have a chance.
God knows that a stomach flu couldn't stop Clowney.

Gotta love the guy in the comment section that broke down the physics of it.

My favorite part isn't the hit. Its the grizzly bear hand that palms the football afterwards and his awareness to do so. shite, the man might've gotten up and scored had his teammates not ran into him.

For some reason the way he picked up the ball reminded me of the Incredible Hulk. Straight beast mode.

To be sure that hit was amazing. Haven't seen many that are even comparable.
Having said that, the TE doesn't even attempt to block him at the snap. Then, the LT reaches down to block the interior lineman. On top of all that, the Fullback doesn't even make an attempt to block Clowney either on his way out of the backfield.
You couple this unholy triumverate of ineptitude out of your blocking scheme with the fact that Clowney was shooting inside at the snap, and Clowney had his opportunity for what the Marine Snipers refer to as "The Pink Mist"...
Perfection...
Clowney will play a lot of football. More than likely he's got a 10 year NFL career upcoming, along with another 12 or 13 games left in his collegiate career.
But never in the rest of that time will the universe align for him to be able to accomplish what he did.
Unbelievable...on multiple levels.
