I don't think there is any chance in hell that Smart ends up at AU. I don't see him doing that to Saban, and I think he knows that if he comes to AU, there is no way he gets the HC position when Saban retires. I just don't see this scenario as likely.

Smart is risky as all coordinator candidates are, but on paper he is absolutely a top-notch candidate and brings everything you would possibly want in an SEC head coach. His work ethic and drive are outstanding, he has not only survived Saban for 7 years now, but he has also done it while being promoted up the chain the entire time. You have to know how to coach and you have to work your arse off to accomplish that because Saban is a terror to work for. Smart is also an elite recruiter, and more importantly his recruiting connections align perfectly with Auburn's niche markets. He is from Alabama and has built connections with his tenure at Bama. His pull in the state of Georgia is very strong. Pretty much every player that Bama signs out of Georgia, he has his hand in somehow. Out of all the realistic potential candidates he would likely succeed the greatest in holding this current class together. Lawson, Foster, etc. would all likely stick with Auburn. He probably pulls Trey Johnson back as well. Auburn is also seriously in need of someone who can whip this program back into shape from a toughness, intensity, and execution standpoint. These are all traits which Saban stresses, and traits which Smart has had more than enough time to pick up on.

How far up on the chain did Dooley get? Not being sarcastic, I truly don't know.

Honestly, I see at, and I'd be okay with it. I am super torn about this info. I can't stop changing my mind

I like that assessment metafour...nice job. I thought he was a good recruiter and you confirmed that.

Dooley never made it past position-coach under Saban. He did spend 6 years under Saban, starting as TE coach & Recruiting Coordinator at LSU, then switching to RB and ST while still at LSU. With the Dolphins he was TE coach, and then he took the LaTech HC job.

the thing that worries me about Smart is him being in over his head...a lot of coaches think they can mico-manage like Saban, but not many can actually do it. If he hires the right OC, I could see it working out.

I will take Smart over Malzahn by a long shot.
Definitely do not want Gus.

malzahn has coached at the BCS level four years, and one of those he was all but demoted by Nutt... Smart has been with saban for close to 7 seasons, included time in the NFL.... he also worked for Richt and played for UGA.
I'm not convinced Malzahn is more experienced coach than smart.

Smart is a freakin puppet. It would be one thing if he coached for someone that wasn't a freakin Defensive guru. Are you people insane? You would want this guy over Gus? Holy freaking crap! I am amazed... Do you think Smart comes up with the game plan or Saban?
Posted on 12/3/12 at 8:36 pm to TheJones
I'll gladly take Smart over Gus.
