Looking for Aub opinions, I pretty much know the opinion of non-Aubs.

Pay Dye raised your program out of the muck. However, he was also at the helm during a "black-eye" period. You can hide your head in the sand and claim his innocense or not - that isn't relevent. What is relevent is the field is named after this guy and he still has influence on your program.

Gene Chizik raised a crystal football - something no other coach at Auburn has done. However, he has since proven to be less that satisfactory for obvious reasons. Many Auburn fans want to replace him with a different coach and move the program in a different direction - this is understandable.

How do you handle the two legacies that each has left?

I may be wrong but I've heard nothing nice said about Chizik in a long time. So do you throw them both away - keep the field named after a guy that everyone outside Auburn associates with as a cheater. What about Chizik? The man deserves some appreciation doesnt he?

It seems Dye should be disassociated from Auburn but never has and it seems fans want to forget Chizik ever existed.

Finally, an unrelated note - tough loss last night. I never wanted to see Aub fall this far. G'luck with the rebuild.

At lest Chiz managed to get them a title even if it was ethically questionable. That's more than Dye ever accomplished.

This. Dye only managed to get a few SEC titles when the conference was at its weakest. Dye was forced out of his position of AD and HC for cheating and is worshipped on the plains.

It isn't like everyone in college football outside of Auburn has blackballed Pat Dye. He is in the College Football Hall of Fame.

It is sad to see Auburn, who has a been a model of consistency in the SEC, fall to the depths that they have. They have too much talent on their team to be this bad. But it is always said that it does not matter how much talent you have, it is all about coaching. Auburn has produced top 10 recruiting classes in each of the past 2-3 years, and they are a 1 win football team right now. What happened to all the talent? I know it is there, so it must be a coaching problem. And, in my opinion, that is where the problem is. I, however, don't think it is as much Chizik, as it is his assistants.

That "vaunted" VanGorder defense makes Ted Roof's defense look dominating. And we had a feeling that when Malzhan left to be the HC at ArkyState, Auburn was going to have issues, and they are. But like I said, there is too much talent on the plains for Auburn to be this bad. The coaching is deplorable, and a change may be the best thing Auburn needs right now.

He won four SEC titles in ten years and coached one of the best teams in the country in 1983 and 1988. He also laid the foundation for the 1993 and 1994 teams. Chizik does have a national title to his resume but if you compare the coaching resumes of the two Dye's is far more impressive. I would say Dye is one of the best coaches to ever coach in the SEC.

this is sorta off topic, but you have to remember that since Dye left coaching, that once in the 90s (under Bowden) and once in the last decade (under Tubs), Aubie had undefeated, no tie seasons and did not win the MNC, the former due to probation and the latter due to their being 3 undefeated teams at the end of the regular season.

What did Auburn expect by hiring Chiz who had a 5-19 record when he got hired? Pat Dye probably involved in this bonehead decision.....you get what get...FAIL.

Thats a valid point I hadn't considered. I'm not bashing Dye in the typical "Bammer" fashion. I recognize the man for what he accomplished at your program.

I'm just trying to understand the different attitudes towards these two coaches.

Pat Dye left the program in good shape on the field. He obviously caused some damage with the NCAA but the fall out was minimal. I think Auburn people are grateful to Dye for rescuing Auburn Football from the abyss and not only making it relevant, but making it one of the best programs of the 1980s.

The negative feelings toward Chizik stem from how bad the program is two years removed from a national championship. He is the leader of what might be the worst team we've ever fielded.

I have said it before and will say it here. I appreciate what Chizik did for Auburn. He took a team that was completely torn in half by a power struggle at the end of Tubs' tenure and won a championship. I appreciate that and will always thank him for that. Now, he has managed to go from that to complete and utter shite in less than two years. If this team had a glimmer of promise that they might get better, I would say keep Chizik and trust it. But this team is a disgrace, yep, I said disgrace. There is fighting between players, classes, coaches and soon to be AD and it shows on the field.

I will remember Chizik for bringing us a Championship, credit him or not, he brought in the coaches that brought in the players and they bought into the same goal and won it. But it is now time for him to hit the road.

Your inability to look deeper into the discussion is on the same level with some of the Bamatards above.
