Analyzing USC after the Vandy game

Some thoughts:
1. Shaw seems to have regressed from last year. Even before the shoulder injury, he didn't seem to be picking up his receivers. Regardless, we have no competent backups. Dylan Thompson failed his first test; Seth Strickland is a walk-on with a noodle arm.
2. Secondary was exposed -- which was our biggest fear. Jimmy Legree played well. Brison Williams totally misplayed the ball on the long TD pass.
3. Offensive line was okay -- I still have hope and expect them to improve. They did get confused by Vandy's scheme.
4. The blown PI call was bad, but it only would have given Vandy the ball at the USC 47. Still cost Vandy whatever chance they had.
5. Didn't like Spurrier's gameplan. Yeah, Shaw getting dinged up changed things, but even so. It looked like the vanilla playbook you would use against an FCS school -- not a decent SEC team. The biggest mismatch was the tight ends -- yet USC only threw once that I can recall and that was the big hit on Justice Cunningham.
6. Need to spend the next 3 weeks finding a receiver who can get open -- since only Ace Sanders did anything -- and getting Shaw healthy. SOS Jr. is the wide receiver coach -- and I really wonder if he is the weak link. We either have superstars (McKinley, Rice, Jeffrey) or nobodies -- despite recruiting well at the position.
7. Why all the hating on Clowney? 5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss means the front 7 played well. Vandy had a couple of big plays in the air -- makes we worry about the secondary; not the line and linebackers.
8. 1-0. And I will console myself knowing this is a better Vandy team than last year. They'll beat some decent teams this year.

Am I the only one that thinks that Vandy is pretty good?
sidenote: I did not realize yall had such tiny WRs now. Not one of them about 5'10? Wow. Shaw is a tough guy who came through when he needed to. If he continues to play with that attitude, then the team is only going to get better.

Yea, but he can't play that way in Baton Rouge.

Vandy is good, But like above poster said, Shaw can't do that against LSU, or Georgia for that matter.

No, I think they are a pretty decent team this year.
The East is UGA/UF (as I said in the prediction thread). Whoever wins in Jacksonville wins the East. Florida is going to field a nasty defense that maybe the best in the SEC this year.
Vandy and USCe are pretty good, but still middle of the pack SEC.
2012 tiers:
LSU/Bama
UGA/UF/AU/Arky
USC/Vandy/A&M/Mizzou
MSU/UT
Ole Miss/UK

Spurrier will Spurrier
It's time for him to stay on the Golf Course and stay off the Football field

Vandy is OK, but really just doesn't have the horses to take advantage of the better teams in the SEC. Rodgers got lucky, but he is not a great passer. And USC's front 7 is very good, but against a team with a decent Ol and a balanced attack and that USC secondary is going to look even worse than they did tonight.

So, you're tellin' me that USCe is gonna suck this year?

Until I see both their QB play and AU's defense, I will hold off on naming them tier 2 teams. Not a knock on them.

Face it. It was 1 game this year. Doesn't matter opponent, QB, defense, we always play very shaky 1st game of the year. We'll be alright, secondary will remain the weakest spot for sure but I think our offense is better than what it showed tonight.

UF defense won't finish in the top 5 of the sec due to their offense putting them in shitty situations

I agree with Funky, Vandy is a pretty good team. They are going to shock some people this year. latt did good ans shaw will be fine. Your secondary will improve

Vandy is good.. but South Carolina sucks.

Yes yes, we got it, you're trying to troll SC. Can we all move on with our lives now?

Great analysis Spring and no denial & excuses......:take note Gumps:
Vandy outplayed SC and Lattimore didn't look 100%. If Shaw doesn't improve it's gonna be a long year.

He's certainly not a great passer, but I lay as much blame on the line. It's very young and small. Hopefully, a couple seasons of Franklin recruiting will help with that.
