The only people that check into psychiatric hospitals for the treatment of alcoholism or drug addiction are people who can't stop drinking or doing drugs on their own, not people with "behavioral problems", unless the behavior is drug use.
Actually a majority of people who check themselves into these type of hospitals are people who are on Orr trial diversion or who are entering at the request of their lawyer prior to going to court to make it look good. I worked in behavioral health for 5 years and they were always trying to save their image or make it look good to a judge.

"Addiction" is loosely defined as continuing the use or a substance/behavior despite the fact that it is known that continued use will have negative consequences. (ie..You cant stop despite your "want" to do so)
The substance or behavior can include almost anything and in this case he knew that getting busted again would have negative consequences....yet he couldn't stop and therefore yes he is in the right place.

Couldn't and wouldn't are two different things.

I think it shows his dedication and determination. I say go ahead, "rehab doesn't hurt even if it's for some type of personal behavior counseling". I mean the kid is 20yrs old and been through a lot of shite.

I've got to agree with Crow on this one. Good for Mathieu! You've got to figure, a year off to get his life together is going to make him a much better prospect in the draft next year opposed to him playing at some low level college and continuing to use.
Get well soon Honey Badger!

Drug rehab for weed?
While I agree it is strange, the drug of choice does not matter - if you cannot stop, even when it negatively impacts your life and causes problems for others, rehab might be appropriate, even for weed.
Part of the problem is the paradox of a society that has deemed it socially (and legally) acceptable to consume alcohol, while condemning marijuana as evil, immoral and illegal. I don't indulge in either, but I cannot understand the different treatment.
In any event, if he cannot stop doing something that is illegal, and if he continues it will cost him millions and millions of dollars, rehab is probably appropriate.

Now where is that stated?

I don't think sitting out an entire season is a publicity stunt... that seems awfully ambitious for PR.

LSU students with the disease of addiction are expelled permanently even after seeking treatment and help if it's for drugs other than weed?
Mathieu wasn't expelled. He was told he could come back as a student but not a football playing gentleman. I assume he's trying to re-enroll in the spring in time for practice.

I still haven't counted out the possibility of him making it back for the bowl game.
Remember JJ last year at this time getting kicked off the team indefinitely?
Dude was charged with a felony and made it back by the Kentucky game.
However, I consider the odds of TM7 making for a bowl game slim to none but not impossible.
