Collins made up his mind to head to Tuscaloosa two years ago, but was persuaded to wait on making a decision. At that time, mother and son agreed on that destination for Louisiana’s best prospect. That changed when Saban talked about using Collins as a nickelback, instead of an every-play safety.

“A nickelblack plays 50-80 percent,” Justin said. “Landon is a 100-percent player.”

I tried to get this discussion going on the LSU RB, but everyone seemed preoccupied for some reason. Is the nickel a big part of Bama's defensive scheme, or is this the Tyrann Matheiu effect (who is given the freedom to make plays all over the field at nickelback)? If it's the latter, I find it VERY impressive that Saban can recruit a 5 star safety by offering him a situational position.

Saban knows to say whatever, but I read "Saban had me at hello" when I read that.

Based on yesterday's game, we got a stud in this one too, with 4.6 speed at the line & ball-hog honey badger skills

The nickel has been a crucial position since Saban has been at Bama.

Javier Arenas had a big year in '09 switching in and out of the slot. They've used Menzie the last 2 seasons in a similar role, shifting him in and placing Milliner outside.

It's basically a starting position now...

With all the spreads out there the nickel back has become very important. You need fast hard hitting backs to defend against it. That is why Saban can recruit so many DBs is because he saw how shut it down.

This doesn't mean that Landon Collins would be an extra DB, he would just slide over to that crucial spot in nickel defense. LC is a starter in base as well.

Maybe the other LSU fans have moved on.
