More interesting but useless stats LSU v. ALA

Red Zone Off drives score pts rtd ptd fg %
LSU 35 34 213 19 9 6 .97
ALA 34 30 174 16 5 9 .88
Red Zone Def
LSU 14 13 71 4 4 5 .93
ALA 9 6 39 2 3 1 .67
These stats show that if LSU reaches your 20 yard line they will almost certainly (.97) score and usually it is a touchdown (80%). Bama scores a touchdown only (61%) of their red zone possessions. Both teams have reached the red zone about the same number of times (35 v 34). ALA has only allowed opponents in their red zone 9 times in 7 games. LSU has allowed 14 red zone penetrations. This is probably due to the incompetent offenses Bama has faced to date as much as it is their suffocating Defense.
Another surprising stat is that ALA has more sacks (15) than LSU (13). This is likely because teams have had almost no success rushing the ball on ALA and have abandoned the run.
LSU leads the nation with the fewest turnovers (3) while ALA has turned it over (7) times. LSU has caused 16 turnovers (6 fumbles and 10 interceptions) while ALA has caused 12 turnovers (4 fumbles and 8 interceptions).
LSU is ruthlessly efficient in converting scoring opportunities and in separating its opponent from the football.
ALA is better at keeping its opponents from getting in scoring position and in keeping them from scoring if they advance to the red zone.
Gonna be a helluva game, I can't wait.

Here's another:
Bama's first 7 opponents: 23 wins, 23 losses
LSU's first 7 opponents: 26 wins, 19 losses
And just think- after this weekend (yes, both Bama & LSU have actual games against actual football teams this weekend), we can do this crap for another two whole weeks!

And converting them to TD's and not FG's.

The most dramatic statistical difference in your collection (and it's an excellent post) is turnover differential. LSU at +13, 'Bama at +5. But in a single game, I doubt that this stat will play a significant role.
I think it will come down to special teams play, including, in particular, establishing superior field position.
Gonna be a war.

1 of those fumbles came in absolute junk time, with our 4th (now 5th) string RB running and just dropping the ball.

Of course it makes a difference in a game. We've had 3 turnovers in 7 games. That is tied for fewest in the nation. TO's are always one of the most significant numbers in a game as close as LSU vs Bama.

Did you reverse the REd Zone D b/w Bama and LSU?

Can you detail Alabama's 7 turnovers? I only remember 5 - each against Kent State. From what I recall, Alabama has not committed a turnover in 6 games.

solid post. I am a LSU diehard, but I will say LSU's rush defense between the tackles concerns me. This game will be won/loss between the tackles for bama and if LSU can go vertical minus any issues with turnovers or special teams.

got in a big debate last night with a bama fan. he thought Bama played a tougher schedule and tried to prove it with stats.

We did before last weekend, but Lsu will definitely have the best SOS from here on out. One of the reasons I liked Bama's chances this year. Schedule is sweet for us.

I didn't mean that turnovers won't matter. I meant that the statistical difference (+ 13 vs. + 5) is probably not a very relevant basis for determining which team's turnover is likely to have an effect. If it were, say, +13 vs. -10, it would be more likely to have some predictive value.

This x 100
I think it centers around our lack of size at LB. I think that's the biggest difference between the 2 defenses. 'Bama is great at LB and the way they are so disciplined in stepping up and filling in gaps makes running the ball inside on them much more difficult than running between tackles against us.
The success of Brandon Taylor coming up from Safety and helping out against the run as he's done all year could have a huge impact on our ability to stop Richardson and Lacey. I like our chances against stopping 'Bama's passing game.

I think we actually get a little better up front as the game wears on, esp late in the game due to the number of guys we rotate in....
If this still undecided by the 4th, i like our chances of stopping the run.

you do realize that Bama also rotates anywhere from 8 to 10 defensive lineman during every game. Not trying to be an a-hole, it's just to point out that we have alot of d lineman also..

I acknowledge that LSU has played two quality OOC opponents (Ore and W. Va) compared to ALA's one (Penn State) but the SEC schedule to date is comparable. (MSU,KY,FL,TN) vs (ARK,FL,VDY,MISS). Don't see much separation between these two teams. LSU has much better kicking game and causes more turnovers. ALA better rushing defense and awesome Linebackers. QB ratings are remarkably even. Odd thing is, recent history in this series proves that there is a home field DISADVANTAGE.
