Brian Billick: There's an overwhelming chance Cam Newton fails in the NFL

Here's his entire quote.

quote:
My problem is the attributes that Cam Newton brings to the game has not translated to the NFL very well. I would put it to you this way. Who in the history of the NFL who's won a championship looks like Cam Newton? Now that's very narrow, conventional thinking but either the league much like we said last year with Tim Tebow is going to totally change because of this unique athlete or he's going to have to change his style of play to compete in the National Football League. Now he's an excellent athlete. He's got better throwing action than either Vince Young or Tim Tebow. He's very smart. So those are going to bode very well for him. This type of athlete coming off really only one year, two hundred eighty-some odd throws. I had one quarterback coach tell me that you can only take about 10% of the throws in the spread and translate them into the NFL. Well that means you're making a decision to give a guy maybe $50 million on less than a couple dozen throws. That concerns me. We all know Heisman trophy winning quarterbacks have not done well in the National Football League and his off-field issues from Florida, obviously to Auburn, right down to the pre-combine media workout that he had, the way he's handling himself, his Lebron James-ish approach to it are major, major red flags for me.

Alahunter is gonna eat your children when he wakes up.
eta - and I agree. I don't see him being a big success.

Billick has also compared Ryan Mallett to Ryan Leaf. I guess he just loves to piss off the fanbases of SEC teams.

quote:
Former Ravens Super Bowl-winning coach Brian Billick was on the show on Thursday, and when we got talking about former Arkansas star quarterback Ryan Mallett, who is expected to work out with the Miami Dolphins the next couple of days, he was critical of his maturity:
Would you be shocked if the Dolphins selected Mallett with the 15th pick? "Wow. At 15, yeah. The debate happens all the time. Basically, you either think a guy is a franchise quarterback or he's not. If you're talking about a first-round pick, and if you really believe he's a franchise quarterback--it just goes back to the Cam Newton discussion--I don't care if he's taken at 1, 5, 10 or 15, if you think he's a franchise quarterback, you take him. Doesn't matter where you take him. Now, once you start talking about that next group of guys... Well, if Ryan Mallett, if you're taking him at 15, you're saying he's a franchise quarterback. If you're saying he's a franchise quarterback, you're saying, 'I'd take him at 1, I'd take him at 5, I'd take him at 10.' You don't qualify it by saying, 'Well, I don't think he's that good, but, yeah, I'm comfortable taking him at 15.' It doesn't work like that at the quarterback position, in my opinion. I think him in the second round is a safer pick with that second group of quarterbacks, but for him to be the 15th pick of the draft ... I like what he does physically. There's some things I'm worried about: his maturity--He's got [all-time draft-bust quarterback] Ryan Leaf written all over him. I don't mean to kill the guy that way. ... That would be a concern for me to take him 15th."

Billick's comments make a lot of sense to me...
And yet, while sporting the best defense in the NFL from 1999 to 2007, the Ravens drafted Chris Redman, Wes Pate, Kyle Boller, Josh Harris, Derek Anderson, and Troy Smith.
Oh, and he threw away the only quarterback who led them to the Super Bowl.
So... maybe it's a good sign for Cam Newton that Billick wouldn't draft him.

Cam is a fraud of the highest degree relative to being a decent human being..he is narcisstic, ego driven, self centered and of course greedy
In short, he is a modern day OJ Simpson sans the violent tendencies... it is not "if" he will be reduced to ashes, it is only a matter of "when".
Of course, I could be wrong but the multiple incidents at Florida, the deceit and his behavior at while a family member at Auburn for 9 months ( see..ther it is in plain site... how many family relationships do you know that are measured in months and not lifetimes?)are all inidcators he is no "Tim Tebow" either on or off the field.

10% of 280 < a couple dozen?
never knew a former football coaches dozen=15

I'll be honest, I don't know why some people on this board obsess so much over this draft speculations, bust-predictions. It's stupid, nothing any of us are capable of predicting- and most of all, not about SEC teams going into next season.
And for a fan of a rival school to post something like this without relaying his own opinion just seems to be trying to get a rise.

Yeah, that's why Brian Billick had his success as a coach... because of his knowledge of QB's and offense.

No matter what you want to think to fit your already shaped views, the QB position is the most important position in the NFL. And has been since the 1960's (arguably before).

Anyone watch the video of cam with jon gruden?
Would love the panthers to waste the first pick on him after seeing that mess
Yeah, because you saw all the video BSPN shot and not just the portions they wanted you to see, right?
And you know what John Gruden said after his QB "camp", right?

Ben Roethlisberger? 6'5" 240 lbs. Sounds very similar to me except the white part. Maybe that's what Brian was alluding to?

You've met him? I didn't know you could determine all these things from the few times he has actually spoken.
Not saying he is or not, but who are you to know all these things.
ALL

He hates him because of football. And because Cam kicked his puny little teams arse nine ways to Sunday. Kinda silly, no?
I'm no FAN of Mark Ingram, but he seems like a good kid and I think he'll be a success in the NFL. My favorite part of Mark Ingram, though, must be his powerful performances in the Iron Bowl.
