I think what most people are saying is let the institutions(auburn, state of al) cover the cost and try to recoup as much as possible from updyke. Save the donations for more important matters such as the betterment of humans.

I think you missed the whole point I was making. I never said it wasn't tragic or that it wasn't a shitty thing to do. I get people being upset, but when I see fans leaving a tree a get well card and holding vigils like it's a young kid, stricken with a horrible disease or a crime victim, then I think it's time to take a step back. Most rival fans have sympathy for what happened, but when they see us turn it into a week long period of mourning, complete with vigils and tree hugs, they can't help but laugh.

What's next, a candle light vigil, a state funeral? Are we going to turn the trees into boats and set them on fire and release them on Lake Martin, Viking funeral style?

I'm as mad as any other AU fan, but I'm not liking the public spectacles that are now being organized in the name of the Toomer's trees

The other point is most people have personal stories and reasons for having such a strong attachment.

Read that story. There are reasons people have close connections to something like the tree's. Even he has one.

Trees can be replaced. An Uga dies, we memorialize and replace him.

But UGA naturally dies. Do you think there would be outrage if an Auburn fan or Tech fan broke in one night after they lost to you and shot him in the head and then called into a show bragging about it? There would be.

The trees were dying on their own but it shouldn't have been a butthurt fan to determine when or how they were going to be finished. It should have been Auburn's choice when and how to send them out and replace them.

I didn't go to the rally yesterday but would rather have people do that then to wake up and hear that someone did something to Bama in revenge.

This seriously can be a learning point for both sides to step back and realize this all isn't worth it. We passed by the "best rivalry in college football" into being ashamed of where it has led us.

Who is calling for them? Not Auburn.

To my knowledge, Auburn didn't call for donations. Bama fans are the ones who organized Tide for Toomers and are driving it.

And yes, that is the feeling most Auburn fans feel about it but are torn between spreading the hate to all Bama fans and realizing that it was just one guy who did it. A hand full of Bama faithful think it is funny, but the majority see it for what it is, an attack on a tradition.

And for any Bama fan that still thinks it is about trees, what would happen if an Auburn fan went over and torched off Bear's head on the statue and then took pictures and posted them everywhere? It is an attack by a single fan, and most wouldn't condone it but it is similar.

Again. Everyone gets and understands the anger and hurt. But if it was found out now that Uga was poisoned, I don't think there would vigils over it.

When??? Are you seriously gonna let the .00000001% lunatic fringe change the way you think of the Iron Bowl?

The only thing I'm ashamed of is that we didn't hang 50 on bama this year.

Whne an Uga dies, everyone is sad. If an Uga were poisoned, everyone would be pissed off beyond belief (having Mike Vick once in your town will do that), but there wouldn't be a prayer vigil. There would just be a lot of outrage. When Larry Munson or Vince Dooley die, then you'll probably see a memorial service or something of that nature. I'm more against this raising money by Bama fans than anything Auburn is doing, but in light of this past season and everything that is happening now, AU is just coming off as being a little too sensitive

absolutely there would be. And the press would be all over it like they are this.

No, there absolutely wouldn't. There would probably be some bricks thrown through windows, a lot of death threats, or maybe even an assault, but not a prayer vigil. I guess it'd be because we deal with an Uga dying at least once a decade, or because, unlike the trees, we wouldn't be watching him die a slow death in front of us

If Uga were poisoned, the press that it would get would be astronomical

There's a difference between an online guest book and a public prayer vigil. Like I said, when an Uga dies we're all saddened but we don't gather around his dog house and light candles
