UNC wasn't awarded an extra play because of the penalty...

It was because they got the spike down with 1 second left.
Not that hard to understand.

And they received penalty yardage too. So there.

Man, that ending made my night.

but you shouldn't be able to spike the ball with 15 people on the field and nobody is set. coaches should never try and rush the field goal unit on at the end of the game. Just snap the ball whether people are set or not.

Anyone with the normal number of chromosomes understood this without the explanation.

The formation was set except for the 4 guys running onto the field and it's not like they weren't penalized for it.

problem is on an offensive penalty the clock should start as soon as the ball is set by the refs then the players have to be set for a second before the snap therefore they wouldn't have time to get the play off.

It might have technically been the correct ruling, but IMO it certainly doesn't seem right that UNC can run an illegal play - with the clock running - and that illegal play in itself ends up stopping the clock and giving them another play.
I trust that the refs got it right, but it certainly doesn't seem right to me.
But Tenn has no one to blame but themselves. They should have never been in that position to begin with (XP, Jackson penalty, etc)

The clock starts on the referees ready signal - a winding of the arm. Whether or not this happens is based on the previous play, in this case the play that determined how the clock is started for the FG attempt was the spike w :01 left, spikes are treated as incomplete passes and therefore there is no 'hot' clock, clock starts on the snap, not on the referees ready signal

sorry bud, but the penalty is technically before the spiked ball because the penalty is called on the snap of the ball. It's not an offensive penalty like holding where the play keeps going.

Wrong, there is no penalty here prior to the snap - which is called a dead ball foul - the team was attempting to get the FG team on, which is their right as long as the play clock allows them. If they go longer than the play clock, that is a dead ball foul - delay of game. The only requirement is that the players to be set for 1 sec prior to the snap except for one allowed to be in motion.
So i believe the penalty was called illegal participation, Not false start, a dead ball foul
I ref'd in TX HS football -we used NCAA rules
The spike occured at :01, the spike is treated as an incomplete pass, so there is no 'hot' clock on the (referees) ready signal...clock starts on the snap
The extra players at the snap with :01 made no diff as far as the clock is concerned, the clock stopped because of the play, the penalty is assessed normally because the game was not 'over' ( but as close to being over as possible). The refs did a great job

How many seconds did JJ have against Ole Miss when he spiked it?
Posted on 12/30/10 at 10:53 pm to cattus
I don't remember the details of the last few seconds even though I saw it....seems like if memory serves, the play prior was the long pass to RR(?) which was a first down, that only stops clock for the chain reset, and then after chains are set and the ump sets the ball, it's a hot clock situation ie the clock starts on the referees ready, so I don't think JJ snapped it with any time left in regulation

Well If I'm the Tenn DC and I see UNC run their 15 Olineman on the field I want the ref over that ball until I get my Anti-LSU FG defense out there.
Since when can an offense substitute and snap the ball at the same time?

They had a quarteback under center and a holder and a kicker. Please tell me how this makes sense

Jbbama. Just rewatched the last play in regulation in slow mo. After the run play, the linesman rushs to the hash from the unc sideline with the spot and the Umpire sets the ball for ready with no hesitation. from the Umps position, his back to the UNC sideline he could have no way of seeing that a few guys were going on the field in a confused mess, so he correctly sets the ball...what he can see - the TN sideline had no players coming or going...

I said prior to spike not snap. It's a little different.

Wrong again, you're saying prior to the spike NOT the snap....which is by definition AFTER the snap, right?
Penalties are either deadfall fouls,( occurring after the play is ruled over or before the play occurs.) Or it's a live ball, let the play finish then enforce the penalty. Or it's for an infraction that occurs prior to the snap, but not blown dead (defense in the neutral zone at snap) The penalty was for 5 yd illegal participation occurring DURING the play which was a spiked ball (treated as an incomplete pass)
