5-19 in 2 seasons at Iowa St. in the Big XII North
21-5 in 2 seasons at Auburn in the SEC West with an SEC title and appearance in the National Championship Game.
26-24 overall.
Have we ever seen such a turnaround in coaching in such a short amount of time? Has anyone ever gone from being close to getting fired at a crappy school in a weak division to running the table in the toughest division in the toughest conference in America?
This is unheard of. What do you attribute the turnaround to? Programs looking for coaches should be scouring the cellars of the ACC and Big East looking for the next national championship winning coach if this were a formula.

Oh, and Auburn had like 65 scholarship players last year. And, were 5-7 when Chizik took the job and were getting destroyed in recruiting the previous 2 years by Saban at Alabama.
Chizik must have really figured some stuff out or something. Wow.

It's called coaching at Iowa-freaking-State...hell, Saban went 6-6 at Bammer his 1st season with a loss to Louisiana-Monroe
Saban at Iowa State = 4-8
Saban at Iowa State = 4-8

Didn't Urban Meyer do the same thing at Florida?

Mack Brown?
Wasn't Mack Brown 11-1 at UNC before he went to Texas? No, he doesn't count.
I know that Iowa State is a tough job. My point is that I can't remember a time a coach anywhere was 5-19 at one school, then gets a good job in a big conference and 2 years later takes a team that was 5-7 with 65 scholarship players to 13-0 and a berth in the championship game?
Can anyone think of such a turnaround?
This really is incredible. They should make a movie out of this story one day or something.

Yes...we have actually seen faster. Do you remember that time a team hired the son of a famous coach that was at a school that was not even a D-1 school at the time? He was an unproven coach (except for the famous daddy) and he went 13-0 in his first season.
Tt was Terry Bowden and he did it Auburn with players they had already bought and paid for. Chizik will go down as the second greatest cheater they ever had on the plains but of course he is a better liar that Terry and has managed to get to the NC game and the probation will follow this time instead of coming before the great season.
What a joke!

Nope. Urban was a big winner at Utah and was highly coveted all over the country. Notre Dame wanted him.
I'm talking about a losing coach coming from a losing program to a big, prestigious school that was struggling and in TWO years putting that team in the national championship game.
Coaches have come and turned programs around quickly, but they usually have winning records where they came from.

You mean the same Iowa State that Dan McCarney took to five bowl games in the seven years before Chizik?
Or do you mean the Iowa State that Paul Rhoads took to a bowl game the year after Chizik left?
McCarney>Rhoads>Chizik
It's not even close.
