Cam wasn't improvising, Malzahn changed the scheme this year for Cam. Malzahn runs a much different offense when he has a true passer at QB. He typically has been very good with a pure passer QB but when you have a freak like Cam you might as well use him.

Did you watch any Auburn games this year? If you had, you would not have made such a foolish statement.

I think Vandy could get Malzahn. I've heard rumors of 3 mil a year. That is big time money, no matter where you're talking. He take them to a bowl game fairly regularly, no doubt.

A few days ago it was Miami, then MSU, then Ole Miss, oh wait Ole Miss was before when Nutt was going to Colorado, now it is Vandy. Just trying to keep up with the logic of the board.

Vanderbilt offers Malzahn. That enough logic?

Must have been on a recruiting trip though.

I didn't make a statement other than pointing out where the board thought Gus was going over the last couple of weeks.

Vandy has offered Malzahn almost twice what Chizik is making at auburn.

Malzahn is in Nashville - again - today.

There is a very good chance THIS will happen.

Also...Nashville has a lot more to offer than auburn.

I would think having your family in a nice city would have a lot of sway in this type of decision.

Auburn - college town with little else.

Nashville - college town (several universities), NFL and much more.

It would make Malzahn the 4th highest paid coach in the SEC and 8th highest in all of football. How does he not accept?

seriously...

1. what big time program is going to offer a guy who has NEVER been a HC?

2. what 'program in need' is able to pay this much?

Good topic if you ask me. I think smaller private schools with high academic standards like Vandy will never be able to compete at the same level as the Alabama's of the world but getting a high profile offensive coach like Malzahn might at least attract some good offensive players and make a difference in the ability to compete. If Malzahn could get a good DC, Vandy might be able to attract some solid defensive talent as well. Most likely though, Vandy will just be a stepping stone for Malzahn to a bigger program.

Chizik turned down a lot of extra pay so he could go after top notch position and assistant coaches.

Vandy is trying to do like the federal government and throw a lot of money at a problem and hope it goes away.

It just cracks me up that last week Gus was going to Miami, a program that even in its current state is far above what Vandy is, he'd likely get paid very close to what Vandy is rumored to have offered.

No way does Miami offer near that much. I think they hire someone close to $1.5 - $2 M. Some notable coaches hired last year:

HCs at other schools:
Kansas - Turner Gill - $2.1 M
S Florida - Skip Holtz - $1.7 M
Texas Tech - Tommy Tuberville - $1.5 M

Coordinators:
Nebraska - Bo Pelini - $2.1 M
FSU - Jimbo Fisher - $1.8 M

Malzahn reportedly offered more than all of these guys. Twice as much as Tuberville. I just can't see him turning it down.

Gus to the U was a rumor. Vandy actually offered. That is the difference.

That $3M Vandy offer for Malzahn apparently includes crazy incentives. Guarantee is more like $1.6M per. I know stuff

Vandy's a tough go for any coach. I think GM waits for a better offer. JMHO

Lord knows I hope you're right, but $3M/year w/ incentives?? Money talks. Hopefully, GM will realize that NOBODY can win at Vandy. But I wouldn't blame him one bit for going with that price tag dangling in front of him.

Oh, everbody remember when Vandy was ranked #15 in 2008? All I can do is

Vandy needs to be running either a triple option or a Gus Malzhan type offense because they will never get the athletes to run a pro style and be consistently successful.

A few key skill players will make them somewhat competitive but their academic requirements will never allow them the athletes to consistently compete for the SEC crown.

You mean right after we beat down Auburn in prime time? Yep I do.

I think Vandy fans' expectations for football are realistic. We know that we're not going to be competing for SEC titles or going to BCS bowls on a regular basis. We think it's realistic, though, to be going to a bowl game every other year or so, and to be in the hunt for an SEC title maybe once every 10-15 years. I think if we schedule better and get the right coach, that is possible.
